to the middleweight champion of the world's call? Wasn't Pavlik one of the cats that were ducking him? It doesn't get any bigger than Kelly Pavlik at 160 and Choc has been strangely quiet.
Dont think so mate...choc is top 4 to 7 in MW and thats about it....just like SMW.....I dont see him fighting Pav or AA......I do see him fighting Sturm or the #2 contender for the vacant WBA strap or regular title...maybe Zibic or Griffen
This is the first time a big name/big money fighter has mentioned him though, I thought he would jump at the chance.
I was going to start another thread, but damm, we have way too many, so ill post this here. Hope u dont mind CarltonBlues? Just posted this in a thread in the lounge. I was a big fan of Anthony's. I even got into fights defending him. Sadly, my support wasnt rewarded by his efforts. This is how i remember hi career. Mundine had a couple of ametuer fights at about age 17. He then went on to play professional Rugby. At age 26, he gave up a $600 000 contract to try boxing. With no ametuer career, he faught for the world title in his 11th pro fight. His natural skill saw him compete very well for 9 rounds, but in the end, it was too early in his career for such a fight. We all know what happened in round 10. A few years later he got a shot at the vacant WBA SM title where he easily outpointed Antwun Echols. It was a good performance, but it was clear he still wasnt ready for the elite, and this showed when he lost a split decision to Manny Siaca, who is hardly elite. He went away from that fight and worked hard on being more aggressive and not running, and tried more side to side movement. He improved a great deal. He then had his 4th World title fight against Kessler. He went down in a pretty entertaining fight, with Mundine landing the cleaner shots, but Kessler outworking him. I had Kessler by 2 or 3. This was the time Mundine could have gone on to be a real player in the SM division. He went on to easily account for the dangerous Danny Green (who went on to be LH champ). A dominant KO of Sam Soliman ( who gave Winky Wright hell for 12 rounds) put him in a great position. With Calzaghe moving up to LH, this left Mundine the sole holder of the WBA belt. The honourable thing to do was to give Kessler a rematch. And at this time, Mundine was at his very best. It would have been a great fight. But instead, Mundine ran. He relinguished his World Title to fight bum after bum while proclaiming he's going to take the MW division by storm. While taking his time to drop the weight, i believe he was hoping Taylor, Pavlik and Abraham were going to go up to SM, so he could turn around and say they are dodging him. Well, Pavlik and Abraham are still there, and he's now at a loss. He doesnt want to fight them, he doesnt even want to fight Sturm. He'll go for the IBO title against Daniel Geale. His last 2 years of boxing has let fans like me down. Its a big slap in the face to us. Anthony Mundine is one of the most naturally talented fighter to ever come from Australia. I believe if he never played League and stuck to boxing at age 17, had 68-80 ametuer fights, he could have been anything. But in the end, he's turned out to be liar who'll never know how good he could have been.
I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out he doesn't want to fight AA or Pav, but what does surprise me, is he didn't respond to Pavlik's comments at all. I thought the mouth would have said I'll fight Pavlik blah blah blah just to big note himself........... Be interesting to see if his bum chum Danny Weilder says anything on the subject in the coming weeks.
Mundine was on melbourne radio SEN on monday nite for about half an hour after midnight in the studio. I was surprised he was on so late, he just flew in after the 20/20 charity match n was having surgery in melbourne this week. To my surprise the interviewer actually knew a bit about boxing and was asking some good questions. Just to recap what he said. - Mundine having surgery on his hip (Tuesday just gone), same surgeon that operated on Hewitt, said his hip was becoming such a problem that he struggled to bend over to tie his shoelace. Says he will be out for bout 6-8 weeks and expects to recover 100% (possible reason for lack of power @160?) - Next fight is definitiely Geale. Said the IBO belt will give him more options and open up more doors. -Interviewer then probed him who he wants after Geale, then mundine said he didnt want to give too much away but to expect a big name. - Was then asked about Danny Green, Mundine said Green wasn't in his immediate plans for this year. Talked about how he been trying to get his body right at 160, n not sure how going back up to 175 will affect him. - IN closing statements, mundine actually gave a shout out to his fans to stick by him and expect big things. Actually sounded like he realises that a lot of his actual fans have jumpmed off the bandwagon in the last few years.
Gday mate and welcome to Aussie ESB....thanks for the news....I will look forward to the Geale fight...thought this was his next move....hope its sturm next or at least the vacant MW WBA strap :good
No worries mate. Been a long time reader of the forum so i thought i'd finally post. Same here mate. Maybe he talking in terms of leverage in that he'd be better suited at the negotiating table if he had a belt.
Story on fox sports from the charity 20/20 game....first time I have seen this story....Mundine talks about Geale....but most of all he said Pav is his main target....I know its **** but as per the title I guess thats his reply...."I want Pavlik"
blah, blah, blah. mundine says the same thing all the time and until he is in the ring with a big name then nothing he says can be taken seriously. surely people don't need to be reminded of the bull**** that has come out of his gob before.
good summary by smellmyfing. Until Mundine is actually in the ring with someone major I will not beleive it, he has had more than enough time and chances. If he does make it though I'll wish him the best, until we see him running away . . . .
