So I was sparring the other day...with a beginner who just started boxing like me :good. We both know general basic stuff, so once or twice a week we spar for about 4-5 rounds with a minute or 2 a round.

I was wondering what you guys do when someone goes crazy on the offensive and just unloads on you. I managed to land a couple of flush shots with my jab and 1-2, and then my partner just went crazy, rushed me, and started wailing like a madman on me.

I try to back off and dance around, but I never emerge unscathed, he always lands a shot or two that hits hard. After a flurry of 4-10 punches, he backs off to catch his breath.

So do you stand your ground and try to duck and dodge around? Or do you just unload with equal ferocity and hope that you are still standing/better off than the other guy?

    Thanks.

Depends what he is throwing. But overall...lateral movement is your friend.

lateral movement is good but hard( i find) counter punching can do it too ie: lure him into charging you with one step back and and come back with a big right to make him think.

Well the point of moving laterally here is to counter, but not be in the target zone of a bull rusher. Also as mentioned, ya, depends on what he is throwing. If the guy is a windmill then have a look to come up the middle...a slipped right, left hook can work all day.

a good solid jab will soon slow up his rushes, and try to double it up. keep it simple straight solid shots.
Also dont move back in a straight line off his rushes. try stepping to the side and countering up the middle.
Plenty of work on the pads and in front of a mirror will help. Good luck.

me and my trainer have been working on the same thing coincidently.

what he has got me doing is throwing a stiff 1-2 then going into a shell catching the first few shots then stepping back or diagonally then landing another crisp combo. works real well but at a higher level as you go into the shell a higher level fighter will catch you so you have to be quick

you need to swival on your feet and move out there cause im guessing he will just be going in a straight line towards you and use direction.
but most of the time you will know its coming i.e. youll throw a shot that lands on him gets him angry and he will come at you all guns blazing, so took up and move wait till he's tired as its easy to defend and make the most of him taking his breath. do it a few times and he wont do it no more cause he'll just hit leather and you wont

foot work. get out of there quick. back up and throw simple shots such as a lead right hand. or a jab. never back up straight though circle around him if possible. and under no circumstances let your self get cornered by a guy who has that ferocity.

Yeh i agree with this. Jab jab jab, and if that fails, tie him up.

In addition to what the others said, don't let him take his breath!! It is VERY tempting to take a breath yourself after he unleashed his fury and backs off for a moment, but this is the moment that you have to make him pay for spending that energy that fast. He wants you to give him a breath; don't give it.

As for a nice example of countering when the opponent rushes forward at ... watch this match of Felix Savon vs DaVarryl Williamson at 1:10. Great counter right when he came in. Obviously it's not as easy as it appears here, but still nice to see:
