Other than Joe Calzaghe has Enzo really done anything significant with anyone else? Would you say his a guy that top fighters would go to if they was changing trainers?
No. And I've never believed he was. Joe is a talent and I'm not saying Enzo hasn't been a good help to him. But one swallow doesn't make a summer, and there's a difference between being good and being genuine world class. Joe had the ability himself to bridge that gap, Enzo didn't bridge it for him. When some wins elsewhere went the way of Enzo's stable it was incorrectly seen as the norm rather than the exception. He was perfectly happy (as happy as Enzo ever gets anyway) to take all the plaudits when he was doing well, and in fact grouse that he wasn't getting more praise. I'm not holding my breath to see him contrite with the way it has so drastically turned around now. Good, not world class. Never proved it outside of his most naturally talented pupil.
Agree with all of this. Also, on several different occasions I remember seeing Enzo barking instructions at Joe and Joe going in there doing something totally different, and successfully! Although his most common instruction 9 times out of 10 seemed to be "work the jab, work the jab, jab jab jab"
Enzo's sons talent apparently has nothing to do with Enzo.....atsch Donkey. But to answer the original question, no he's not. He isn't based in the right place to draw the kind of boxers needed for a trainer to be deemed world class. If he was based in the US boxers might give him a shot, not in Wales.
no...and the enzo fight tonight proves it.. he should have made enzo stand back and pace himself after the 3rd round...he should have seen that he wouldnt knock ola out and was going to punch himself out trying...stand back and work a steady pace to an easy points win...it would have been easy for enzo mac.. but between both enzo's they didnt show half a brain between them.
Totally agree with that. It was obvious Enzo wasnt stopping anyone tonight and the plan was all wrong. Just like the plan v Haye was wrong.
I wouldn't put him up there with, say, Freddy Roach, but I think he got a lot out of some limited fighters, like Gavin Rees and pre-Haye Maccrinelli. Is he training Nathan Cleverly? If so, I think he looks a good prospect and it'll be interesting to see how he does with someone else with a bit of talent.
Okay I guess you're right. Enzo did impregnate Joe's mother. So I guess you can say he is responsible for Joe's talent.. But other than that..... Talent is innate you numbskull. Of course Enzo has nothing to do with Joe's ability to fight. If you're naturally talented, you're naturally talented. It's not like Enzo bred Joe to be a boxer since birth and trained and taught him everything he knew. Get the **** outta here. Enzo gave up on his failing jazz career to support his son who happens to be a talented fighter. Enzo learned everything he knows about the sport from books. That's a fact. The crazy old man said so himself.. I'm sure Enzo helped Joe throughout his career, but let's not pretend that Joe is where he is today because of his father's excellent training methods. If Joe was a librarian, do you think Enzo would've become a boxing trainer? Okay then. Joe's talents as a fighter bred Enzo's career as a trainer. Not vice versa. Donkey.
I don't know. He did well with Calzaghe, quite clearly. I don't think Calzaghe did EVERYTHING alone. Then again you can only work with the talent at your disposal. I think a MAJOR problem for his gym is sparring. It is a miracle Calzaghe achieved so much with sparring against Gary Lockett, Brad Pryce and Enzo Maccarinelli. Who does Enzo Maccarinelli spar? And therein lies a big problem.
at one time he trained 4 world champions at one time. good to see we are getting our 1 Calzaghe thread a day quota in.
You make a statement like that and call me a numbskull? Millions of people are born with attributes to succeed in certian fields but it takes an acknowledgement of the talent and guidance for it to be truely realised. Thats what Enzo did. You're wrong, live with it.:good
