to Tarver in the rematch??? Those who saw this fight believe that the loss of weight/muscle did affect him, and those who hate on Roy say it didn't affect him. Guys like to talk out of both sides of their mouth, and give excuses to the most honorable fighter they like, or the fighter most liked because of their aggressive style. If it is a fighter who they don't like because of their mouth, or how they act in public, etc...whatever the case may be...guys don't give them excuses. Jones I guess survived 13 years hiding his glass jaw before losing weight and turning old before our eyes and being caught on the chin finally lol...

Jones lost all of his weight at the age of 34 years of age. How many fighters go up and down in weight like that? Roy looked malnourished for the rematch. He looked a full weight class smaller than Tarver. Bottom line, is, if Jones excuse for losing weight is not good enough for you then so be it. Just don't tell me weight didn't have to do with anything.

PAc fans will probably agree with this because their man lost twice by ko in 3 rounds because of weight.

    Yes it did.

He took somewhat of a beating in the first fight although he clearly won.

He slowed a bit for that fight from the muscle loss, and the 2nd fight he slowed even more.

Not right away, first they believed it was just a "fluke" or a "lucky punch." This notion that he was somehow "still" weight drained from something he did the previous year didn't surface until sometime later - which pretty much makes it nonsense, like any revisionist excuse.

The people who like to say now, "It's obvious that weight caused him to be KO'd," didn't believe that as they saw the fight, and weren't worried about that happening beforehard (when Roy was about an 8-1 favorite).

LOL, great way to show your bias. I'm sure people who "hate on" Roy would never bother to watch him getting KO'd. :patsch

Just off the top of my head, Bob Foster and Archie Moore did it numerous times. Fabrice Tiozzo spent quite some time fighting up around 190 and heavier, and then suddenly sucked back down to LHW.

There's a reason no one was worried about Roy's weight making getting him KO'd before the fight.

in the rematch No~ Jones had plenty of time for his body to fully adjust to the move down in weight, in the first fight perhaps, but lets not forget Jones won that fight, so to be honest with you, I dont think the weight was a factor at all in their rematch, I just think that some things happend that you just didnt normally see in a jones fight, he had a man who gave him his stiffest test in their preivious fight, basicly call Jones out on his **** during the refs instructions, something that is rarely ever done in the sport, and that had to get into Roys head.

The left hand shot that caught Roy, that was perfectly timed, they knew Jones pulls his head back after he fires a shot, and that is what they exploited in the fight.

i was 15 feet from the ring saturday night when roy fought shieka... and shieka has always been known to be a big puncher.... in the fourth shieka got roy on the ropes and landed "Two".... count them TWO hooks to the head that had Roy's neck completely turned... seriously they looked more devastating than the punches he took from johnson and Tarver... and he shook them both off and landed an uppercut the first time... and a hook to the body the second time... then looked over Shiekas shoulder and smiled.... I can tell you this the look on his face was like he was amazed he took those shots.... and Roy had so much confidence on his face he looked like Roy from 93-99... and if he has his punch resistance back...like he used to have.... and he starts boxing instead of show boating.... I seriously think that we are going to be in for a big surprise over the next few years... cause Roy is still good enough to take on any of the big names in and around 175... not nut hugging either....

    Agreed.

The weight looked like it probably affected him in the first fight, but there's no basis for saying he was "still" weight drained in the second. In fact he looked and fought markedly better in the 2nd fight than the 1st, he just got beat regardless.

Yes there was. Jones said before the first Tarver fight that he was struggling to get back to 175.

That and the fact that he was 35.

Another thing people dont notice is how Jones sat on the ropes alot vs RUIZ and took that habbit backdown to Light heavy...mistake

    Look at it this way.

U put 2 stones of addition muscle onto a machine of a body....the 2 stone you lose isnt the same two stone you put on!!

a slight factor but not as big as everyone usually makes out he'd had more time to adjust after his first fight which he won and in the first round of the rematch he was actually fighting really well and had tarver hesitating and second guessing himself and he had the speed that wasnt there in the first fight. Obviously the punch was a perfectly placed shot and sometimes you can't do anything about it but his confidence was shot to pieces after that fight

.....There is currently Herbie Hide who also spent a few years at Heavy, even holding a title for a while and later making a few other challenges after losing it, before moving back down to Cruiser and is still regarded as a decent fighter in the WBC rankings (#2 and WBC Int. champion).

Although by saying that it didn't effect Hide, I believe it did effect Jones Jr. although it was ineviable anyway that he would get caught eventually if he kept on fighting. Nothing against his style, he was very good at what he did and was always exciting to watch but he relied too much on his speed and movement and never had a truely solid defence. As he got older and he slowed down and didn't move as much he got hammered. The weight shifting simply sped up this process.
