Bloody good question Mush! Have been watching and reading all the promo stuff for their new Sports channel and there's not the slightest hint that boxing's on their agenda. Hopefully someone else here might deliver better news they might have heard.
It is a good question. I had a look at the one HD tv guide yesterday and noticed that on this Saturday morning 12:30AM is a program, Boxing: KO TV Classic. I reckon they are prob working on landing a few deals with some of the TV networks or promoters, and launch something in the next three-six months. Its a brand new station and given they broadcasted the Klitschko - Thompson card last year, they must be interested in establishing a foothold in this area.
I know once apon a time it was in their thinking - they were talking about doing a few local shows with a local promoter....but he got busted for drugs and I think those plans are out indefinitely (surely there are other promoters!). Hopefully they can show some international stuff!
Its up to the production companies and producers to put proposals to TEN. Not enough supporters for TEN to start producing boxing. Strange that a promoter has not done this already. Sponsors will pay lots more cash for free to air boxing then they will foxtel of PPV. I think TEN will look at it without a problem but its got to be a turn key product.....and its gotta be a "star quality" to get prime time results. Love him or hate him.....and most of you hate him....Mundine is the only "star" in aussie boxing....he pulls more numbers than Vic or Rocky with the rest of the pack not known at all by mainstream public. Sad but true Mundine will never go free to air. So I guess thats the problem
I don't know if todays TV exec's have got the starch to push boxing. The PC brigade have got them cowering. They think that because the football codes have come down heavily on the biff, they think that's what the public want, which may be the case for mums & dads & the kids, but when a yike takes place, it gets plenty of air time. They (TV) know bloody well that we (culturally) get a kick out of a bit of biffo. I think that if they found a regular time slot that competed with a movie time (We can always watch them on DVD) it would get a following, & a pretty good one, simply because fighting has been outlawed in every other code. As for Mundine's shows, it could well mean that not everyone that buys them, watches them because it's Mundine, but because it's a boxing show & there's few of them. I think you would have to be pretty dumb if we thought the general public believed that Choc's fight were about competitive boxing. Here's hoping.
With the ever increasing trend for sports clothing (Everlast, Lonsdale etc) and sports equipment (Sportsmart, Rebel Sport etc), you'd reckon sponsors wouldn't be that difficult to find. The product would be aimed straight between the eyes of their market demographic. What Rodin says about contact sport is right though. It's becoming so bloody sanitized so as to apeal to Mrs Jones and her young son Johnny who she doesn't want to see coming home dirty, let alone bruised!
At a total stab in the dark I would say 60% to 70% of Choc's income is from people who want to see him get beaten. I would also say most of the Joe average in the public think Mundine fights are top fighters.....we all know the real story but most other people read the press and Mundine talking about being "the Man".....then buy the fight thinking this is the fight Mundine goes down.....the guy he is fighting is rated 15 in the world and this is for a world title. Lots of better shows on mate....they dont get 30% of the support.
Agree with you - but I'd say a minimum 75 to 80%. The interesting thing of course is that he knows it only too well and promotes the negative 'support'. The money's all the same afterall, whoever it comes from.
It will be great for boxing and I hope it is close to prime time and they spend some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$on advertising
