I would take Gomez at 122 over Floyd at 130. He was a more dominate fighter, a true KO artist, and he had better wins on his resmue.

I love great defensive fighters and true fight fans appreciate their skill set but nothing is more impressive in boxing than a highlight reel KO. That is the ultimate goal when you get in that ring is to knock the other man out. Few did it better than Gomez. Especially as a Superbantamweight.

I am biased towards fighters like Joe Louis, Alexis Arguello, and Wilfredo Gomez though.

    Good thread, tough call.

My gut feeling is that Mayweather was a slightly better fighter, but the evidence points to Gomez as he proved his quality by beating tougher opposition.

**** it, for once I'm going to go with my instinct and say Mayweather, because I genuinely can envisage him outpointing Chavez and Arguello at 130 (I think Chavez would take him at 135 though). He was a special fighter at 130.

Pintor was BW champion who moved up to fight Gomez. Pintor was competitive, the fight was close until the KO in 13th or 14th rd. Gomez was a beast and of course the better fighter but that win was helped a lot by his elbows. In answer to the question, Gomez was more impressive at 122. I believe he has 17 or so successful title defenses, all by KO and was undefeated with 34 wins, (32 by KOs) when he moved up to FW to fight Salvador Sanchez. Floyd maybe the best 130 lb ever but he didn't stay there long enough to really be considered the best in that weight.

Gomez was one of the most versatile fighters in the entire history of the sport in his 122 pound peak. He could do it all. Box and move like Pep and punch like Robinson. Brilliant fighter.

A conclusion like that can only be drawn by someone talking completely out of their ass. You won't find footage of a fighter who dominated his opposition more thoroughly than Gomez. He literally toyed with the best the division had to offer, making them look amateurish with his boxing skills prior to overwhelming them with his power.

All good post but some keep saying Gomez has a better resume and better wins but isnt sort of unfair if maybe Floyd didnt have that level of talent to fight and could only fight what was there.....is it fair to penalize him?

This isnt just for floyd is for all boxers diferent times, different weights, and the level of comp is not always the same but both fighters beat whoever was put in front of him....so i dont think you can use resume because it handicaps one of the fighters...but what do you guys think i could be wrong.
