I pick Dempsey by stoppage, but i feel if the possible outcome of Fitz getting the ko win occurs, it's not a case of him having to survive an onslaught, that could happen early.

Fitz could catch Dempsey coming in and hurt him like Carpentier did. However I would favour Dempsey he seemed more durable and was the larger man.

Dempsey was better than Fitzsimmons in every department.

    Not true.

It is not an easy comparison because their styles differ.

I would venture to say that Fitzsimmons was a slightly better counterpuncher and more likley to spark you out based on a single split second mistake.

Fitzsimmons was a great counter puncher for his era.

Fast forward to 1919 when Willard Fought 24 year old Jack Dempsey.

What counter punching by Fitzsimmons stops that hurricane?

Dempsey revolutionized Boxing. IS THERE ANY FOOTAGE OF A FIGHTER PRE 1919 V WILLARD WHO FOUGHT LIKE JACK DEMPSEY?

Dempsey KO 1 Fitzimmons. Dempsey would come into clever bob and just swarm all over him and flatten him, while bobs waiting back to land the big countershot, dempsey will flatten with him a 4-5 punch combination fitz has never seen before. Dempsey way too strong and powerful, and Fitz chin was vulnerable.

Janitor...I just cant see these 165lb guys like fitz and greb out-slugging dempsey and marciano. hard for me to fathom. In fact, I cant see either of them taking dempsey and marciano punches for more than 2 rounds.

I have to pinch myself somtimes but I have come to think that they would both be a serious handfull for anybody in the 185 lb range. This is not a conclusion that I expected to reach when I started researching them.

Greb seems to have been a sort of hybrid between Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe with a chin like James Toney. He was just so fast and unorthodox that nobody could set up a clean shot on him and he would land two of his own while they were trying. Even technical fighters like Tomy Loughran and Gene Tunney resorted to slugging with him because it was the only way they could win.

Fitzsimmons was just lethal if you made a single mistake. You would have thought that Tom Sharkey would have just ploughed through him with their respective styles but Sharkey just got anihilated twice while Jeffries wasnt able to stop him in two tries. I honestly think that Fitzsimmons was the most dangerous heavyweight puncher before Sam Langford came allong.

By the 10th round he'd be in pretty horrible shape even if he was still on his feet and I think Dempsey would be doing a bit better because I don't think he will have taken as many hard punches.

Fitz has never seen a 4 punch combination thrown at his head before. He is going to be in for a huge reality shock in the first 20 seconds of the fight. Not to mention fitz didnt have the best set of whiskers, which doesnt bold well for a 165lb man against a Prime Jack Dempsey.

    Dempsey KO 1

Fitzsimmons would almost certainly have seen a four punch combination coming at him.

Dont forgett that Joe Gans got a job carrying this guys spit bucket just to learn the tricks of the trade.

Fitzsimmons punching techniques were almost irespective of his actual boxing style. This guy fashioned Joe Gans into a pound for pound great, and fashioned Jim Jeffries into an absolute heavyweight monster. Even Gene Tunney copied his punching techniques. All verry different fighters.

It could be like the Hagler :Hearns of the heavyweight s.
Dempsey, swollen and lumped up around the face, nails Fitz then drops him savagely.
