I agree that SRL was not typically a "Physical" fighter but, SRL was comfortable and ripped at 147 pounds in 1980, and he was strong.... I seriously doubt that if you put the 1993 version of J.C. Chavez in a time machine against the '80 version of SRL, Chavez never would've manhandled SRL like Duran did in Canada..... As a welterweight, Chavez fizzled / failed.....

Agree, but by the same token Chavez did not consistently use those tactics like Duran did. Chavez would give his man more punching room and use that elbow to leaver his man off so he could bang away at him. Like he did against Castillo.

Duran was more skilled at mauling. Ive seen Chavez maul Rosario a bit, but he did not do it as effectively as Duran imo. Not to say Duran was stronger, but more skilled at that particular ability.

Roger Mayweather was a gifted boxer with power and a glass-jaw.... Mayweather was pasting Chavez early on in 1985, but then he got caught, thus, stopped in 2 rds.....

Roger Mayweather rebounded and was on track in 1989 at 140 pounds, however, he couldn't handle the pressure from Chavez and quit on his stool after 10 rds......

Roberto Duran would chase a front-runner with power like Mayweather right outta the ring, as well.....

As for the left-hook that dropped Duran 2X in two fights against DeJesus, so what? Duran was too anxious and careless with DeJesus BOTH times...... STILL! Duran settled the score and proved to be the better man / fighter in the long run.......

As much as I think Carlos Palomino was OVERRATED in the late 70s, he still was a decent sized welterweight with skill and power..... A blown-up Roberto Duran mauled Palomino and dropped him for the count in 1979 at MSG to win a UD......

Again, I can't see Chavez beating up or mauling Palomino at welterweight in a time machine at all......... I think Carlos Palomino would beat Chavez over 10, 12 or 15 rds....

I dont really understand the reasoning behind that post. Ive said Duran would beat Chavez imo. Duran was a better technician than Chavez ive said that to. I have not slagged Duran off.

It seems people wanna pick up on all Chavez faults, but they wanna pass of Duran's indiscretions.

There is no way Duran would get by Chavez easily though. No way. Chavez was as formidable as Duran. Chavez would not get Ko'ed, because he had a good chin, and he had an excellent body attack and a relentless work ethic. Perfect placement of a left hook to the body to.

Palomino had a BAD 1979............. He lost his title to Benitez over 15 rds and then dropped that 10 rounder to Duran in June....... Thus, he retired......

I admit, Palomino looked in great shape upon his return to the ring in around 1996... He won a few fights, and KO'd former WBC 140 lb. champ Rene Arredondo inside of one round; but then he looked old and slow against the ordinary Wilfredo Riveria on Cable TV....

I like both and I'm a fan of both . . . but Duran can do things in the ring better than Chavez in all departments.

They both have sturdy chins, both can hold their ground and exchange punches.

Chavez pisses blood for a month after this fight. Corner is forced to throw in the towel in the late rounds.

whoever would of won this at 135, if would of gone the distance. chavez at his strongest at 135, but roberto's right hands would of humbled him. it would of been a close give and take, but just because dejesus fought the best fight of his life and beat duran doesn't mean chavez would of done the same, but to give chavez the benefit of the doubt, duran has stated at 135 chavez he thinks chavez MIGHT of beaten him, but over 135 chavez's ass was his, and even though duran might of been inconsistent after his loss to srl, the version that destroyed palomino, cuevas, moore, and beat barkley smokes chavez.

Chavez has been bludgeoned and stopped a couple of times. Duran was knocked out by Hearns 20 lbs above his fighting weight. I really don't see the point in stating that both were stopped when they were past their best. We are talking about both in their prime. Duran went on to beat Barkley who took hearns out who took duran out. Chavez never dared to take on comp like that. Chavez wouldn't even fight Norris. Wait, sorry Chavez fans lol...my blood was up lol...
