I think he was trying to make a statement about the state of that fight basically.

Can't be Mercado becasue that was a draw. The rematch that Hopkins won wasn't his hardest fight.

Back in 1993, a tough kid from California named Gilbert Baptist gave Hopkins a very tough night for 12 rounds. One judge only had Hopkins ahead 115-112. And truthfully, I felt it was a fight that could have gone either way. Very competitive.:smoke:smoke

He also gave Terry Norris a very tough fight in 1988.

My friend met Hopkins in California one time and asked him the same question .. Hopkins said Echols was his toughest fight.

Imo it was Echols. Segundo Mercado put Hop down one time legitimately with the other being more of a bad call...but that fight wound up a draw, not a win for Hop. So going by saying that Hop won, I'd go with Echols. Hop dominated that fight, but he showed his chin and true skills against a very tough prime Echols.
