The beauty of P4P lists is that the context of recent fights counts almost as much as the end results. Vasquez and Rafa had proven their excellence in the ring before their trilogy and brought each other to new heights. I consider them active because they still plan to fight and don't appear to be on an indefinite hiatus. If they look a step slow in their comebacks, I'd consider moving them down. For the time being, though, they've proven their among the best. When it's all said and done, that's what these lists are about: who's the best in the game today.

Because I don't think the idea of comparing one fighter to another fighter in a different weight class in terms of pound-for-pound head-to-head-in-a-hypothetical-parallel-universe-where-you-can-put-everybody-in-an-equalizer-machine-and-make-them-the-same-size ability is without merit. However, people arguing over the exact "proper" order of top ten, fifteen, twenty-five or whatever lists and going so far as to express outrage if a publication like The Ring doesn't exactly jive with theirs - is ludicrous. Individual magical fantasy match-ups make for interesting conversation; and can even provide some insight as to who the actual "best" current fighter is, weighted with deference to quality of opposition and manner of victory. Rigid lists assigning a number to all top names with subjective rationalizations just seems very, very strange to me and yet it constitutes 70% of the jibba jabba among boxing forums - and in fact, boxing fans in general.

Basically, p4p debate is like communism - smashing theory but absolutely no way to execute without making a hot steaming mess.
