At 143.5, could Marquez pose Floyd a real challenge?

Let's try to be objective here.

This would be a fight between two absolutely masterful ring tacticians. One is a supreme talent and bona fide ring genius in his physical prime. The other is beginning to battle Father Time, but has proven himself again and again as one of the smartest and toughest warriors in the sport.

This would be a career high weight for Marquez, but he has filled out well at 135, and in some ways, might benefit from not having to worry about making weight. Floyd would have to drop a small number of pounds, certainly not the kind of poundage that would seriously slow or weaken him.

Both have shown the ability to exploit weaknesses and adapt on the fly as a fight progresses. Both are naturally inclined to survey what is given to them and throw counters.

Floyd would of course have massive foot and handspeed advantages, and the better chin.

As a fan of the sweet science, I would love to see these two match wits. But I can't see this fight playing out many other ways than Floyd looking absolutely dominant. Marquez's principle edge over Pacquiao was that his technical skill balanced out, and sometimes confounded, Manny's clear edges in speed and power. In Floyd, he's facing an even faster fighter, but one who is also smarter in the ring than Manny, bigger, and who almost NEVER gets caught out of position.

I'm already seeing the word "tuneup" getting thrown around pretty casually. I think that's silly given the caliber of fighters we are talking about here. Does anyone care to make a case for Marquez actually making this an interesting fight? What would he try to make Floyd uncomfortable?

There is absolutely no indication JMM can be as good as he is weighing in at 143. Floyd looked good at 150 if that adds some perspective.

I agree with you, if it were possible, this would be an excellent matchup. But the weight and timing are just too great.

At 140 lbs and not a pound more, this is a fight......and one that JMM could very well win.

The formula is simple, neither fighter has faced a technically better fighter than the other

It may very well turn out that JMM wins this fight at ring center boxing with a workrate and throwing combinations.......

Mayweather is very capable of boxing at ring center, but for some reason, he likes it better playing defense and resting on the ropes......

Lets see if Mayweather can stand the pace of a highworkrate skilled fighter, and do it all from ring center having to use his intelligence more so than his physicality.

RING CENTER......thats where JMM may win this matchup.

.....but against a talent like Mayweather, the matchup has to be at 140 lbs, to ask JMM to fight higher than 140 lbs againsts boxing's true p4p, would be asking too much.

Center ring and work rate... interesting.

When I think of Floyd looking vulnerable, I think of three fights, and really just one whole fight. One case is the first six rounds of Judah, another is the first eight rounds of Oscar, and the third is Castillo I.

Castillo I and Oscar are pretty simple. They were big enough that they made Floyd very uncomfortable at points when he tried to just sit back in the pocket and pick them off. This won't work for Marquez.

Judah was fast enough that he was actually timing Floyd well with his power shots. Now this I could see Marquez having some success with, not because at 140+ he'll be as fast as Zab, but because he throws all of his punches extremely skillfully. So center ring yes, but not using a volume approach, but more of a wait and see approach the way he did against Manny.

What I see breaking him out of this kind of rhythm though is Floyd's speed, especially the jab to the body. He sets up so many things off of that punch, and with the size advantage, he'll also be using his front shoulder/ elbow to great advantage.

As far as the weight goes, I agree that 140 would be better for Marquez, but with Floyd demanding 147 and holding most of the cards, 143.5 seems most reasonable.

Floyd Mayweather beats JMM at any weight. Sorry JMM fans.

I think Floyd can still make 140 btw. He is considered a small fighter at welterweight. He should make the weight with no problem.

At JMM age there is no point going up in weight. Except for a big payday. Not way he will beat Floyd. Floyd is not a heavy puncher, but it will be too strong for JMM. Even if he comes down in weight. And we already know he is also very fast.

My point is. WHO NEEDS FLOYD MAYWEATHER?? Both Hatton and Pacquiao are selling very well. So JMM, who we all know is having some issues after his battles with Izzy, can very easily get a nice payday with any of these two. Enough to live like a king in Mexico.

You are getting the brothers mixed up, but it's no biggie.

The much better scenario for JMM is of course for Hatton to win and then corner Manny into a third fight. But if he loses a reasonable fight to Floyd, where's the harm? It's sure not like losing to an unknown fighter in an Indonesian jungle. He's bounced back from much worse.

Don't see anybody beating Floyd at 135 or 140 except MAYBE, Pacquiao. At 147, I think Paul Williams or Shane Mosley.
I am not even putting Cotto in that list. Too many issues right now. I hope he postponed the Clottey fight. I see something bad happening.....

Wrong Marquez, but I get your point. I doubt Pac will pass PBF over JMM. There is just too much money in Pac-Floyd fight, that's why JMM is probably looking to get Floyd first.

The highlighted would be an erroneous approach by JMM.....
You dont take a wait and see approach against a quicker and faster skilled fighter......

I say workrate, because Mayweather usually does'nt use that approach, he likes pot shoting with ones and two's ......the way to disrupt that is for JMM to come in with combination puncing 3's and 4's and force Mayweather to fight at Marquez' pace......

Marquez does'nt have Judah's speed, but his timing and the way he angles his body and hands to throw shots with leverage, are alot better imo than that of Judah's.

......and lets make one thing clear here, though Marquez is'nt judah fast, he's far from a slow fighter.....lets remember here, Pac is fast, and Marquez was repeatedly getting off combinations on him.
Marquez is quick enough and fast enough to deal with speed......I think alot of forum members analyzing this possible Marquez-Mayweather fight are overlooking this.

No,Marquez is pushing himself at 135 too,his great skills are the only thing keeping him there.Juan Diaz was pushing him around and had him in big trouble.Hatton would beat him at 140.
    Mayweather is too big.

I think Marquez has a shot if you factor in that Mayweather has to go down in weight and the ring rust.

No, Mayweather's speed, defense, and overall skills would be too much.

Diaz did this in he early rounds mainly. Marquez admitted that he didn't study footage on Juan and had planned to use the first couple of rounds to study him. He expected to struggle in the beginning and things went down as planned for his camp. This team's intelligence can't be discredited.

At 143, I can see Marquez giving PBF trouble. The more I think about it, the more confidence I get in JMM. He can throw every punch at multiple angles and knows how to time combinations. But Floyd is Floyd... Man, I hope they make this thing happen.
