His defence is excellent in the sense that he gets hit very little. But for his defence, he uses his footwork (wasn't trapped on the ropes or in a corner for 12 rounds against Peter), size, handspeed and solid technical ability. He does bend the waist quite a bit, but not nearly as much as a shorter fighter does. And why should he? As Foreman said: You're tall, so fight tall and don't give up your height!

Wlad's defense is being tall. He can keep people off him with the jab, and if they get close he clinches. It's not pretty but it's darned effective. Bending is one of those things that is beneath Wlad, like throwing uppercuts, or combos with more than two punches.
