Then why did Calzaghe on arguably his best night have so many problems with him ?

In my opinion he didn't. It was fairly tight early on then Calzaghe coasted home.

I felt very let down by Kessler on the night. I think there are other fighters on Joe's resume who gave him a closer fight.

I disagree, it was the only fight i can remember where he looked seriously like getting badly beat. Kessler hurt him several times early on , Joe had to pull something special out. It was an exceptional performance in my opinion.

I'm no fan of Calzaghe (largely due to the way his career has been promoted) and I wanted him to lose that fight. I put a little bit of money on Kessler if I remember rightly. After 6 rounds there was little question about who was going to win that fight in my opinion. Out of the early, to mid rounds, I little doubted that Calzaghe was in any real trouble of losing that fight.

You don't have to be a fan to know he was the real deal. You have a point about him being in control to a degree after six but you shouldn't ignore that it looked like being a very painful night for Calzaghe for the first four or five.
Anyway, Kessler needs to prove himself whichever side of the fence we're on.

Mikkel Whossler is rather overrated around here, although thankfully the hype around this guy has dropped down from previous levels.

I am still waiting for Whossler to fight a live opponent.

    Wasn't the Hopkins fight closer?

I meant badly hurt and in trouble. Hopkins never looked like stopping him, there were times when it looked like the likely outcome in the Kessler fight.

The Calzaghe v Kessler fight was one of the technically best displays of boxing ever by both men. It was the true definition of the sweet science.

It's a pity Kessler hasn't done much since but that's through no fault of his own. He has constantly travelled to the States to be ringside at big fights, looking to try and seal a deal. Once his current promoter situation is over, we will see the best of him. He's a very good fighter. He also seems like a nice guy and is very respectful.

He needs to try and unify the SM division.

I do think Kessler gave him a good fight, I agree there. But Hopkins did, in fact, put Cal on his ass. Which to me was closer to stopping Cal than at any point in the Kessler fight.

Perhaps there is a particular point in the Kessler fight you can point to were Cal looked to be in more serious trouble.

Calzaghe was sparked with some fierce uppercuts, especially in round 4. He only survived those because he has a great chin. A lesser fighter would have hit the deck.

The Hopkins one was a flash KD from a right hand that put Calzaghe off balance. But he was on his feet straight away and looked okay.

kesslers career is still being written, albeit slowly, he has tremendous potential, but his inactivity is inexcusable.
