I put him pretty up there. he had the most defenses of any SMW champ ever. And one of the highest in any weight class ever, I think only Joe Louis had more then him. He also beat the all time great Bernard Hopkins. Some people tried to downplay the victory but Hopkins in his very next fight beat top P4P fighter Kelly Pavlik pretty big, so you cant say bernard was shot. Joe also beat the undefeated Mikkel Kessler, and he beat a then undefeated Jeff Lacy, who many at the time picked him to lose against. I think Calzaghe ruined lacy permanently because after that beating he was never the same. So where do you put him among the all time greats?
I put him in the upper HOF level, but just shy of ATG level. Head to head, he matches up with anyone at 168, but he just needed a few more big fights to cement himself as a solid ATG. His resume, though I feel it gets **** on too much, doesn't match up with what he could've accomplished- he left some good wins on the table. A hell of a career and fighter, regardless. Pretty crazy to think he fought the style he did, took his fair share of shots, and never suffered a broken nose.
The ironic thing is that Hopkins wins resume isn't discernably better than Calzaghe's in quality, but it in name recognition. As it stands, I don't rate it much higher because most of his big fights involved him having the weight advantage and having his opponent move up (a real trailblazer for Mayweather), and he lost to the 2 best H2H fighters he fought. Whenhe finally fought Calzaghe, for example, Calzaghe came up in weight, went to Hopkins back yard with Hopkins' ref, and still won. Hopkins scores his points for longevity and for stepping up his competition in the twilight of his career.
