You think that might have been fixed?:huh That guy went down like he'd been shot .Total amateur, head up in the air ,stood straight as a lamp post,if you are there to be hit the Fat Man will get you out.
Rumor has it the BRAWL FOR ALL was staged to be a big push for Steve Williams, who was considered by many backstage to be a legit tough guy. But when Williams was KO'd by Bart Gunn, it sent the WWE spastic. The man they paid millions of dollars to have in the company as a powerhouse (Williams) was derailed by Gunn. In "revenge" for this, Esch was brought in to face the winner of the tournament, which turned out to be Gunn. Now Esch had been in the WWE before, "knocking out" Marc Mero in what was clearly a worked match...this time, however, there was no work. Esch came in, beat the dog **** out of Gunn, and collected $50,000 for thirty seconds worth of work. Gunn, shortly afterward, was dropped from the WWE, never to return. I guess in a sense, McMahon was telling Gunn the hard way, "You want to break from the script? Then **** you, we'll do the same to you."
Mero/Butterbean was worked, but again, that wasn't part of the Brawl for All. I watched the Brawl for All back when it first aired and don't remember a single match that was staged. The recent Holyfield/Hardy match, of course. But the Brawl for All? Not that I remember.
Its like this....Williams was supposed to win, he was the favorite in the tournament, and the WWE had just brought him in....I can say without much of a mental strain, that everybody involved had the idea that it was Williams time to shine...sure, do real fights, but once you get in with Williams, take the fall....Gunn didnt follow the script. Plain and simple. Esch was the equalizer.
JOhn conteh against Rudi schmidtke was a horrible more or less career ending beating. Schmidtke's face was a mangled mess at the end of it.the german was a good technican too, with an excellent jab.
Also, if the Jeffries/Finnegan bout is to be considered a genuine HW title bout, this was perhaps the most brutal, one sided mismatch in heavyweight history. The papers of the time reported that Jeffries looked fifty pounds over his normal fighting weight, but that made no difference, as he ultimately destroyed Finnegan with two body blows that all but caved his chest in. The kayo was in less than 50 seconds.
These fights may seem fake to some especially considering that it was a WWF show but this is what usually happens when two 200+ lbs men swing haymakers with little regard for defense. Gunn was pretty much punished by Butterbean for being the winner of a tournament he was not supposed to win. He later went into MMA and had two fights, winning one and losing one.
