Did you see any of the Larry Holmes bouts? Wasn't the Olympic trial fight in your home town? I've seen a pic of it, with Larry on his way down. :yep

i was refering to len hutchins, contehs 3rd straight title defense. where he popped hutchins w a swooping left hook to end the fight in the 3rd.( conteh practically won that fight with one hand since his right was so limited from being broke previosly twice, impressive.

Of course. Yet again, I get the Lonnie Bennett and Stinger Hutchins fights mixed up. I've only seen them about 30 times each.
Lonnie's bout was the brief one I was referring.

the second holmes fight was followed by the bobbick fight, . i spoke with nick before about the fights w bobbick and i remember that he said he felt he truly only lost to bobbick once, when nick entered into intl comp in the pan am games and the rds were longer, he just was too tired, against bobbick--- the other loss nick said that the ref was from the same town as bobbick and didnt like nick for some reason. nick said that he had fell down somewhere in the fight which was a balance knockdown. when he got up early in the count, nick told the ref he was ok, and the ref stopped the fight right then and there ,nick was not even hurt. nick protested but TO no avail he got ****ed.(THAT WAS JUST HOME COOKING I GUESS). the last time they met was the 72 trials in which nick had shattered bobbicks nose and had knocked bobbick down and was kicking bobbicks ass. but the cut above nicks eye was bleeding badly causing blood to flow into his left eye. bobbick did not cause the cut, it was a door at the team hotel that caused it, all bobbick had to do was breathe on the cut for it to reopen. nick had him beat cold, the ref stopped the fight while nick was on the stool going into the 3rd rd. robbed again, that is why holmes fought bobbick, it was a boxoff due to nicks injury, the olympic commiitee knew nick would have won, so they had abox off between holmes and bobbick to decide the 72 us hvywt olympic spot. i would have loved to see wells vs stevenson

...kolcade..thanks for the stuff about nick wells.

re: a good trainer and manager for him? I'd say trainer, charley goldman.
anyone who could teach marciano to keep from falling over his own feet could train anybody. if he could instill in wells the same training-work ethic marciano i think wells could have gone to the top.

manager - well, again al weill was able to use contacts and pick the right opponents as he did would certainly move nick to go all the wy because nick had more natural talent than marciano and was a harder puncher.

my other choice would be jack kearns.

    Ya Jaclem,

Rocky must have been so overly protected the way marciano's managar threw him in against all those # 1 rated heavyweight contenders(charles, walcott, Lastarza II, moore) or Heavy favorites(Louis, Layne, Lastarza). What a lucky bum to have such an easy schedule!

Or was the one with the protected schedule Ezzard Charles defending his title against all those low rated IBC controlled ham and eggers instead of Clarence Henry, Bob Baker, Rocky Marciano, Roland Lastarza, Rex Layne, Archie Moore.

Good talkin to ya hope all is well bud!

..as for ezzard...shame on you for getting nasty on mother's day!!

ps. fun to he sparring with you again..

Do you think Clarence Henry, Bob Baker, Nino Valdes would have been better or worse matchups for him at the time?

Ha! Don't worry, I still think Ezzards the best!

More like good to be learning from you again! Thanks Skip!

...i don't remember who he fought the times i saw him, except for bobick. i must have seen him several times in the amatuers to have formed my opinion of him...i recall one afternoon when some guys were over and i said "do not look away for one blink of an eye. wells is going to rush out of his corner and knock this guy out. which he did."

i don't know if any of his pro fights were televised, so i may have seen him only in the amatures..and i thought he was rhe hardest hitting amatuer i ever saw and didn't see why he would be any less so as a pro. as i remember he was also fast...at least he was in getting to his opponent when that bell rang.

and i think that was his stratagy, knock opponents out quick. 110 career kos 72 1st rd kos. i just would have liked someone to have developed a better oxxygen tank for him. if you got him past 5 to 6 rds that is where he seemed to have issues . i do agree he could have been a contender if the right person would have gotten a hold of him. larry holmes was a great energizer bunny.he seemed to hnever tire. it would have been interesting to see how eddie futch would have planned for a fight between them in the pros. i get sick of seeing people bashing nick sometimes on here. he had the potential but no guidance in the pros, he was young and naive.

Interesting topic and it is even more crucial with the heavyweights. 1 punch and the prospect and their career can derail.

Futch got involved with Bobick and helped build up that big record of his. But not everyone was buying into it.

    Dundee was with Ali.

Clancy had Valdez and Griffith and Ahummada and later on Foreman.

I'd go with Freddie Brown. He was with Duran, but he'd worked with lots of styles and was capable of handling a slugger. And he did bring Arcel out of retirement to work with Duran so there is that dimension as well to consider. A guy like Dundee likes the boxers better and trainers have styles themselves.

But Freddie was a no-nonsense guy that got his guys into shape. Just as important, he would not have just fought regionally and would've fought on undercards at the bigger venues and I think that kind of thing sparks interest and a fan base. He was popular from that 72 timeframe and some nuturing and visibility would've kept him in the eye of the public. And he'd have picked the right opponents and would've been polishing the diamond which he knew how to do. And he'd worked with sluggers before and some diamond polishing of a southpaw big hitter would've been very interesting.
