If Rocky Marciano is so overrated, why has nobody else done what he did?

Tommy Morrison would knock Marciano thru the ropes. Believe it.

Most overrated HW in history BY FAR.

Excellent point. I'm not even going to bother and read what the Rocky detractors have to say cause I'm still not done with school work

Ok, Rocky was a cruiserweight with a super heavyweight chin and super heavy punch-- you just can't dismiss him so easily. He might have beaten the greatest.
Tyson was heavier, but Rocky had the punch. and great stamina....

Rocky's movement was arbitrary anyway, I mean he didn't slip and duck specific punches, more types of shot, jab etc. So I don't think the split second, if it exsisted, would hurt him too much. He'd be ok slip and duck wise.

One big conern is that what made Rocky so utterly lethal was that he didn't drop off. So when the opponent was exhuasted he was still fighting like he was in round one. Good he maintain that?

Morrison actually said that he could beat Marciano, on an episode of "Ringside". He said he was too small and couldn't compete with modern HW's.

Manny Stewart was sitting next to him and just kind of looked at him wierd, then he said something like, "well Tyson was pretty much the same size.." - then Morrison was like, "uh.. yeah.. well.. anyway..".

I can't remember the exact exchange, but it was basically like that. You could tell Manny didn't agree at all, but he didn't feel like crushing Morrison's delusions.

Marcianao was a bad ass mofo. He may not have been a master at the sweet science but he was the best brawler I've ever seen. Try to catch his matches on ESPN Classic if you have a chance. The sound of his punches sound like a Roger Clemens fast ball hitting a catchers mit. For those who try to claim he was over-rated, they would have been KO'd with one punch by Rock in the ring.

Morrison was right, Stewart was dead wrong. Tyson was a fit 185 at 15 years old if I remember right, and a very VERY solid 200 in his pro debut. He fought as heavy as 250 in his first 15 fights.

Face the facts: Marciano was tiny, slow and had the mobility of a duck. He had a good punch - we think - and a decent chin - we think. He never had to take a punch from a talented big guy and we never saw if he could hurt a truly talented big man. The few good things we think we know about him are purely hypothetical. Did he have superpowers? No? Then he obviously doesn't have the physical tools to compete in any good HW era.

Oh wait, he had tons of heart and 'intensity'. Well no other fighter has ever had that. Of course he's the greatest ever, then :nut

I never said he was the greatest- just great.

Everything you have said is nonsense. As someone already posted, even old Louis was on an eight fight win streak in which he beat some very notable names. These guys were great, despite their age.

    Peace.

POST SCRIPT: With the exception of Ali, you can play this game with anyone's record. Lewis never would have beat a prime Tyson and Holyfield, Joe Louis knocked out the same guys everyone throught were bums in the 30's, etc. Its just silly.

    Mcgrain,

Cleveland Williams was knocked out by 5'10 180lb bob satterfield out cold for 20 minutes in 1954....and williams retired and wasnt even fighting in 1956 so I doubt williams would have been at all competitive with marciano if he had fought him before retirement. Certainly williams, an unknown unrated prospect at the time had no reputation for marciano to fear.

"If Rocky Marciano is so overrated, why has nobody else done what he did? "

Well, quite simply because nobody else who was undefeated has retired undefeated and stayed retired. They come back, and keep coming back, for another pay check, for financial reasons.

I don't think the thread is about being undefeated. It's about cleaning out the Heavyweight division by being too small and slow for it. Or something like that, I don't ussually read a lot of comments when people are just talking nonsense so I'm not exactly up to date on how bad Marciano actually was :yep

Why does this boring myth persist? Check the record, 49 consecutive wins was accomplished before Marciano and has been accomplished after.
