Max Schmelling hiding two Jewish children in his hotel room from the SS and Gestapo, then helping smuggle them out of the country. .
Byrd got up from absolutely everything. He had the Ruddock like ability to hit the ground like a sack of **** and against all odds get up. Remember the Ike knockdown?
Quit with a broken jaw. I don't care if the Pope comes down and tells me I must, I ain't fighting eight rounds with a broken jaw.
Dennis Andries showed a lot of guts vs Hearns in their bout, he got bounced around the ring like a yo-yo and beaten unmercifully yet hung in there until finally subdued, gutsy fella was Andries.
Being forced to do something (and he depends on his German handlers a LOT), and doing something because you feel it the right thing to do are two completely different things. He showed no bravery when he said to the referee he is not continuing the fight.
Audley Harrison carried on with a broken jaw in the Rogan fight :nut Seriously..... Chris Byrd vs Ike Ibeabuchi and Wlad Klitschko Danny Williams vs Mark Potter (injury) and Vitali Klitschko (hitting canvas like a bouncy ball!) Nigel Benn vs Gerald McClellan - knocked clean out of the ring
Carmen Basilio in the 2nd Robinson fight. How could any human being carry on in a fight with an eye that looked like that and actually be competetive. There is no way that fight should have been allowed to continue with such an injury. I can imagine that his corner was afraid of what Carmen might do to them if they called a halt so they let it go on.
Mike Tyson fought with a broken back and it was spinal. what about Dorsey and Kelley in there fight they both gave out tremendous schellakings
Randall"Tex" Cobb continuing to follow Larry Holmes, despite taking a terrible beating. Mike Weaver, never giving up against John Tate & is rewarded with a miracle knockout and the Heavyweight Championship! Humberto Gonzalez suffering a terrible cut & goes on to outbox Michael Carbajal. Roberto Duran lasting eight full rounds, despite terrible stomach cramps!
Marvin Johnson`s return bout vs Leslie Stewart was as brave a performance by a fighter on his last legs as I have ever seen. Marv was essentially a punching bag for the duration of this fight and was floored three times while losing every round and taking a frightening beating in the process. But Marvin being the brave warrior he was kept on coming forward looking to win, and while he was beaten thoroughly his will was never broken and his fighting spirit never subdued. So while the beating he took was horrendous, his courage under fire and against all odds was beautiful to behold.
Andries fought 3 wars with our Jeff 'Hitman' Harding. The courage shown by both was above and beyond!
