Boxing needs to stop looking for just one star to carry the sport. Build the foundation so that when your star loses (and he will), you're not sitting there going "OMG WHAT DO WE DO?!"

You also HAVE to do something about these commissions.

It should be time to make boxing the best in the world. You the US-boxing fans has the power. If you want to see the best vs. the best instead of US vs. US.

Bring back boxing to the fans. Las Vegas - the boxing fans mecca ?. Dawson vs. Tarver for the boxing fans?

Outside of US - fights is in front of 10 - 50000 spectators. In US only for celebrities and on PPV.

You the fans has to demand the best vs. the best though.

(hope it is ok to comment the thread not being an American)

will not happen again i think. american hegemony, whether in economics or sports is at the tail end.

US is losing its dominance in basketball, baseball, softball. the only sport that you are truly dominant now is american football since your the only country which plays it significantly anyway.

its just the way it is. the british invented football but brazil and italy have embraced it with a passion and hence have won more world cups. 5 for brazil, 4 for italy. england just once, and they had to do in on homesoil.

just as it is in other sports, boxing, gymnastics, volleyball, track and field, the US is losing its dominance. while it may produce stars which will allow it to win a particular global competition once or twice, or several times, it will not do so in a consistent and overwhelming manner.

    1. Bring boxing on national TV.
    2. New managers and promotors ot stop those joke fights with predetermited winner
    3. New faces, I'm sick and tired of the same bums over and over again, bring someone hungry - see what V.E. Ramirez, Carl Davis Drummond and LaJuan Simon did against A. Alexeev, Chagaev and King Arthur.
    4. New political tensions - can you imagine a new cold war between USA and China...and the HW championship at stake between the HW champ of China and the one from USA. All this live on the national TVs all over the world

Some prime-time top p4p match-ups free of charge on a network tv channel. cbs, abc, nbc, fox etc... hell, if not top p4p fighters, at least pick some with some decent recognition that also bring an exciting style. valero/juan diaz-type fighters.

I somewhat agree, because i do believe Pac has heighten it's attention(atleast in the bay area, mind you we have a big population of filipinos). I hear more people talk about boxing now, Sure some of them are casual fans but a good amount of those casual fans will eventually become real die hard fans like ourselves. Boxing should take advantage of this time right now, it's gotten some momentum again so i believe these ideas that people have came up would really help the sport right now...a lot.

I don't see any other sport taking over American football in popularity in my lifetime.

Your post is mildly amusing, as well as demonstrative.

I made this topic specifically about increasing the popularity of boxing within the US.

You respond, off-topic, that US boxing will never be dominant vs the world again, "american hegemony, whether in economics or sports is at the tail end."

Which may very well be true, but nonetheless, as you have demonstrated, first thoughts stray to American dominance, internationally, even when its not the topic at hand.

Boxing fans need to DEMAND that (P4P) fighters fight the best and if they refuse to, then they should no longer be recognized as the best by the fans untill they face that fighter/challenge. You have to put pressure on these guys and not suck up to them no matter how much you respect them, they are in it for the money at the end of the day and, if you are willing to swalllow some of these BS fights they want to put on, then they will continue to fight whoever they want to fight as appose to who they should be fighting.

I'm not so pessimistic. Remove the bloodsucking leech promoters, from having so much power and leeway, and getting some serious network time for quality matches could be the formula for surprising positive results

Good point that hasn't been brought up yet.

The belt system/commissions has gotten to where ridiculous is the norm.

So can we agree that the many problems today stem from:

    1) PPV's

    2) Money hungry promoters who wield much control over matches and fighters

    3) No big time networks (HBO / Showtime are premium channels.. though ESPN has been looking promising lately, and has shown FNF for years)

    4) Commission / Belts aiming to draw fee's / keep as many champs and paper champs in one division as possible

    5) Lack of new blood (?....... I know walk with me disagrees with this, but most kids go into bball or football from lower privlidged backgrounds compared to the amount that used to choose boxing a few decades ago which is caused by the first four problems)
