gil clancy had an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport and a great sense of ocassion and turn of phrase to match it. got shivers in my spine after big george KO'd moorer and george turns into the corner to pray

i liked jones, his accent sounds a little out of place at times but at least he knows what he is talking about.....i say give tyson a chance though

 

Well... taking him on his own, Roy Jones is arguably the most knowledgeable as far as what's going on in the ring & tactics... & he has the best set of eyes (that includes seeing what's about to come!)... but his delivery isn't the best, he sometimes is ambiguous & amateurish (though that's pre/post fight... not during; and is more to do with rolling off too many boxers' names as to the point where he just sounds stupid) & he does tend to self-promote a little too much: when talking Toney, he'll bring himself into it; when commentating on any Slick Fast Boxer putting on a precision-clinic vs. a (relatively-speaking) Slow, flat-footed brawler - he'll bring himself vs. anyone into it as a comparison; yes while they are valid, they're not necessary, Roy!

But.. having said that, when it's WITH the other 2 (Lampley & Kellerman/Merchant just say)... he has 2 others with good delivery, who can make up for his deficits... plus they complement each other well. Though, perhaps in the superfights.. Roy Jones in place of Emannuel Steward... would take away from the epic-ambiance & grandeur of the event.... !

So it was a choice between Steward & RJJ for me.

When Epic, superfights: I'd go Emmanuel Steward.
When perhaps talking of good fights but not MEGA-fights: Roy Jones
When Lampley needs checking & bringing back down: George Foreman (wish he could make brief 10-second appearances sometimes.. just because Lampley can get on my nerves).

 

I guess Steward. It is a tough call. I think Lewis is doing a good job.

I am surprised at all of the support for Jones. He made unprofessional comments and wasn't that good overall. IMO he was the worst by far.

Merchant, Lampley and Foreman had the best dynamics and were the most entertaining...

 

Steward tends to predict the outcome of the fight too early...often he end up with egg on his face...

 

exactly what I meant!

(though when I watched that fight at the time, it was on Sky here in the UK-- so I hadn't heard that commentary til recently.. in the last few years).


Big George was right, though. That was unprofessional. Not to mention, a little ignorant. Glad he checked him there!

 

And the most biased

 

That was actually quality... even if a little harsh!
Larry Merchant, while perhaps a gentlemanly figure & soft-spoken long-stay who will forever be synonymous with Big-Boxing...., often made silly remarks & would subtly push his view (arguing from position of authority, or associated-with-authority/'knowledge').

Not trying to start a Marquez-Pacquiao debate-war here.. but, example:

"I have it even going into the final round".

Then when Marquez clearly wins the 12th:
something like: "great fight... I'm calling it another draw"

Even Lampley checked him on it! ('bit difficult to have it a draw if you had it even going into the final round' <-- words to that effect).


Also, Lederman is blind & I sometimes wonder just which village in the US of A is missing an idiot. Having said that though, I couldn't imagine big-nights without his "....baxing camission.... there is no 3 knockdown rule.. only the referee can stop the fight". Though, perhaps HBO ought to look into sacking him & just playing a recording of Lederman when it comes to that brief-segment on big event broadcasts! Would save them a lot of money, and me the frustration at seeing his scorecards.
