I got some used Grant boxing gloves and an Everlast Everhide headgear from my trainer today. They're used, but the headgear is pretty new, at least compared to the headgear I usually wear. Anyways the Grant gloves are pretty beat up but they feel good but HOLY **** they smell something terrible! Ancient sweat and probably dried blood. How do I go about cleaning 'em? I just want to disinfect, I don't expect to eradicate the smell, just want them relatively clean. Thanks.
Disinfectant spray, ummm I think you can throw em in the washer and dryer, not sure though. I know how bad the smell is, everyday after training, my hands smell like gorilla ass
I usually use Fabreeze. I hear hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol works well. Some grappling guys recommend adding a cup of vinegar to a load in the washing machine but that probably won't work with gloves.
get some antibacterial hand sanitizer, rub it all over your hands (generous amount) then put on the gloves and move your hands around in them. take them off and put them in front of a fan so the airs blowing in them and leave for a hour or so. then you can take some ceder shaving (think pet store) fill a couple CLEAN socks and shove them in the gloves to deoderize them. Last and I know this sounds stupid, but it works. spray some shaving cream on the outsides and buff them clean with a rag. (shaving cream works wonders on sneakers also)
what i do if someone else wears my helmet is fill up a sink with warm water, and hand wash the helmet with some soap, then wash it down and wash all the soap out. Then i hang it up and let it drip dry. I wouldnt soak your gear for too long it might wreck the gear. But saoking for a few minutes and hand washing shouldnt be a problem.
I usually train Get home put it out in the sun for about 20-30mins. Put a little bit of shoe powder. works for me.
I wouldn't put them in a machine. To clean the outside, try warm water only. Cleaners tend to dry out leather/vinyl and promote cracking. If you must use a cleaner, use hand soap since it's very mild compared to other soaps. For the inside of gloves, I use a 2 step method Every week, spray the inside with febreeze (i use a generic brand) to kill the smell. Every alternating week, spray the inside with peroxide to kill germs (peroxise isn't sold as a spray, but you can just get a spray bottle and pour it in). One or two sprays does the trick. Air the gloves out after every use. I've had gloves for 1.5 - 2 yrs that do not smell.
Oh, and an alternative to using Febreeze is sneaker balls. Those deodorant balls that people put in sneakers.
These days, I don't use fabreeze anymore. I use glove dogs for smell. For disinfectant, I use lysol spray and clorox wipes.
