The list of names are suggestions to get the ball rolling. I don't why people like don't understand this, or why you seem to think 'popular' is the same as 'famous'.

I'd go with Ray Leonard as being the most popular. He was very famous and everyone loved him.

Ali was certainly the most famous, but was always disliked by a sizeable number of people because of his out of ring antics.

    Ali.

Though he was actually a bit of knob, and I far prefer Joe Frazier.

some odd picks in this thread

people saying that Hatton or Hagler or Duran or Hamed or Trinidad are the most popular fighter in history(or people having them in their top 5 most popular) is nuts

Sugar Ray Leonard still is not a good pick

POPULAR means known worldwide and by the MOST people

most everyday people wont truely know who Hatton, Hagler, Duran or Hamed or Trinidad are

some might know Leonard but I wouldnt put him in the top 10 most popular boxers ever

Obvious top two are probably Ali and then Tyson

People need to mention Foreman, Louis more
De La Hoya is a good pick too

How the hell does Joe Louis not get mentioned in this discussion? Far and away the most popular boxer at a time when boxing was the most popular sport. Ali obviously comes first, but Louis is probably ahead of Tyson, de la Hoya, etc. Leonard is ahead of those guys as well. In terms of popularity, it's probably something like...

    Ali
    Louis
    Dempsey
    Leonard
    Tyson

    No, it doesn't.

Popular means well liked. You can popular amongst 2 people. Well known and famous are not the same as popular and well liked.

Ali and Tyson are the 2 most popular ever, I would say after them it would be Louis, he was quite popular in his day.

ali is almost mithical and todays generation tyson is tangable u can go to other countrys provinces and these names would be known. DLH is more state/metro side. the others are todays name makers but im not sure how they would hold up to time especially with how boxing is not scene as mainstream as it was.

for example trinadad a great fighter with the exception of the dlh fight, 10 years later hes pretty much forgotten, JCC another great fighter but no one remembers him and most kids confuse him with the grape revolution leader. Hell when floyd was at his peak 2 years ago the media still dose not know his name example would be the big show wwf fight where most of the audiences were wondering whos that guy? pac and hatton will be known in there perspective countries.

They were suggestions off the top of my head to get the ball rolling.

I actually forgot Ali, but like I said, its just those that came to mind.

I wish I hadn't started this thread to be honest. To many people don't know what 'popular' means.

I'm not saying Ali wasn't the most popular.

I think he was the most well known certainly....but well regarded, well liked, well loved? Not so sure, given his black nationalist antics...

Ive got a theory that Iron Mike Tyson wouldnt have been as popular if he didnt have such a dynamic name.
Seriously. If he was the same dude but called Tom Bosley or Barry Evans or something i dont think he'd have been as famous.
