I don't think Marquez and Vasquez get enough love and respect from the fans

    What do you think?

People talk in hushed and revered tones about the Frazier-Ali trilogy (Even though there is a gaping hole in their class in the form of II) and the Zale-Graziano encounters (Even though footage is tough to come by) but the greatest trilogy in recent times, and arguably of ALL times, happened very recently - these guys are living legends. If being a great fighter was judged upon how great the fights you put on were these guys would be right at the top.

YouTube - Israel Vazquez vs. Rafael Marquez III Highlight Video

And yet Marquez's comeback was with a whimper rather than a bang...okay, opponent not-withstanding, but check out the welcome back Cotto and Pavlik recieved? I like both those guys (especially Cotto) but they've done nothing, nothing for fights that even scratches the surface of this great trilogy. They aren't fit to carry the jock-straps of Marquez-Vasquez IMHO. And yet they get all the glory returning with similairly out-classed opponents.

It's not even 100% sure that Vasquez will fight again, I understand, but if he does, then let's hope he gets more respect and love than Marquez did!

I agree, Marquez's comeback has gone under the radar. I think it is partly to do with the lack of TV coverage.

Criminally overlooked guys. I've seen a lot of trilogies in my life, but their was the most action packed 1-2-3 ever. 3 outstanding FOTY brawls between this generation's best BW and the true SBW champion, and everything came together to be one of the best rivalries ever - and the last 10 second knockdown as a decider was beyond magicial. How could anybody ask for more?

They might never be the same again, but that's the price they were willing to pay for our entertainment. But where's the love?

They get nothing but love from me anyway (for whatever that's worth).
You can certainly argue it's the greatest trilogy ever. The advantage it has over Ali-Frazier and Barrera-Morales, is that every fight was great.
Those two had second fights that were just "ok" - whereas Rafa and Izzy just kept out-doing themselves.
I think their inactivity is the reason some people seem to have forgotten them - which is a shame.

I agree with the sentiment. But I also think Cotto has been involved in a lot of very exiciting fights.

What's so great about their trilogy is that fight 3 > fight 2 > fight 1.

Sure he has, but nothing like as interesting or brutal or exciting or flat out good as all three of these.

They have the curse of the "small man." Just like Ricardo Lopez the ATG, Vasquez and Marquez are too small for the casual fan to notice. Its like what my cousin told me who is a casual fan:
"I can name you a couple of fighters but from lightweight below i dont know ****."

I think that this is a reasonable enough explanation, but the Lopez coparison isn't really a good one, because he tended to be in one-sided fights or good fights.

Pacquiao, Barrera and Morales are all smaller men that heave done well with the public at large and I can see why, but why not these guys?? Odd.

Agreed. Although Cotto-Margo is on or around that level.

I love the Torres, Judah and Malignaggi fights well.

Couldn't agree more McGrain...it's sad really, these guys put their life on the line(literally) in these three fights...3 of the greatest fights you'll ever see and arguably the best trilogy EVER...Most of the time the little guys get overlooked, but whats puzzling, as you mentioned, is that this problem didn't exist for Barrera and Morales or Pac and JMM, and going back even further Sanchez and Gomez...These guys deserve enormous respect...they get it from me, but sadly not from enough other places..the casual fans you can understand(I asked a buddy of mine if he knew Vazquez and Marquez, he said "Never heard of him" to Vazquez and "That guy that's fighting Floyd right?" to Rafa) but I bet there are "harcore" fans here who haven't even seen these brave men fight ever...

the reason is that apart from fighting each other, their records are not spectacular. Marquez has two very impressive wins over Silence Mabuza but that's it. As for Vasquez apart from the Marquez trilogy his best accomplishment is his win over Jhonny Gonzalez or maybe going 1-1 with Oscar Larios

that trilogy is amazing no doubt. they have my love and respect. But they are still pretty flawed fighters compared to guys like Mosley, Pac, JMM, Hopkins, and PBF.

people have a hard time picking JuanMa over these guys but I'm confident he would beat either at this point and even before the trilogy it would not be an easy pick.

In terms of HEART, they are true kings.
