Hearns but the way Pac is going he may surpass Tommy. I'll always remember a fight i watched on TV as a kid, Hearns vs Andries at LHW. Andries was a beast but Hearns floored him several times in a war and eventually stopped Dennis. Thats a former welterweight ,someone fighting at the same weight as say Shane Mosley not only beating a big ****er say of the same size and ability as Clinton Woods but knocking him stupid in the process. And this past his best. Pacquiao isclose though. It's good to see legends of the sport come through, boxing needs that like any other sport.
I remember that fight also. Andries had beaten J.B.Wiliamson for the title and had knocked out Tony Sibson in a defense of the title. Then Andries won the title two more times after Hearns beat him. Andries did beat Bobby Czyz fairly easily in 1988. Hearns outclassed Andries. It is amazing how onesided it was. The only thing Hearns was caught with was a wild punch by Andries when Hearns was trying to finish off Andries. Then later that year in 1987 Hearns won the middleweight title against Juan Roldan. A few years after that he beat Virgil Hill.
Another blasphemic thread... People need to leave Tommy Hearns out of their threads if they're gonna say dumb ****. Are you guys kidding? The Hit Man? Pac ain't even close to him yet. Hitman gave us some of the best fights of a generation, win or lose. And would be the clear P4P right now if he was in his prime at 147. Not even close.
exactly what I say. Pacman is a good fighter but he does not have the superfight experiences and iconic fights like Tommy did. Pacman fought some great guys who were on the downside of their prime, but he never fought a really great guy yet who was prime. Even Floyd is on the downside a little.
Tommy wins this one easily. I know this is an old thread but in no way does Pacman beat out Hearns. Young people do not know boxing and they are unfairly rating the younger boxers who are not proven.
Pac is a great fighter but not in the Hearns class. Why are people always rushing to make a guy a great fighter? Hearns is in a class which is hard to get to. Hopkins is there, but Pac is not.
Tommy Hearns is one of those fighters who does the impossible. He knocks out clean legends and he outclasses them. I do not mean guys like Hatton but real legends like Cueves and Duran outclassed and knocked out. Pac could not stop Barrera/Morales/Marquez. Hearns at their same weight class would have stopped all 3.
also the lighter weights are leaner and less guys fight there than in the heavier weights like Hearns fought at! The weight class above 130 is the weight division where punches start to get harder compared to how much the chin can take. Speed is good, but eventually the heavier weights will take over. Hearns fought in harder divisions than Pac.
Pac has more to prove. Can he beat Mayweather who is good and more prime. Mosley and Pac is a good fight, but Mosley has been too inactive.
It was not dominant. I should have specified. He stopped Morales when Erik was washed up both times. He stopped Barrera but could not in the rematch which almost took away from his earlier stoppage since he could not improve on it with a guy more diminished. I think he got the Junior Jones -Barrera the first time and Morales was washed up when he beat him both times. But Morales did beat Pac.
Pacquiao has achieved more, though I think Hearns was more talented. If Hearns had had a few lucky breaks - not having snapped his right hand in the opening seconds of the Hagler fight, having got the decision in the second SRL fight - his record could have taken on a totally different gloss, and he would be ranked WAY higher than he is now. The way it is, though, I think Pacquiao has the better record, and in ATG rankings, that counts.
I ain't trying to take away from Pacs record... But when the hell did he ever fight a monster like Hagler... or one of the best EVER to even look at a pair of gloves like Sugar Ray. And when did he completely, unequivocally, hands-down STARCH someone like Duran? Hearns fought some of the best fighters of all time, and more than held his own against them. 1-2-1, should have been 2-2. Who would be Pound4Pound right now if Hearns were in his prime???? The way these Bob Arum types are going right now, Hearns wouldn't be able to fight for FREE nowadays from 147-160...
