It's the biggest tournament someone his age can win at amateur level. It's what used to be the Cadet World Championships(for fighters aged 15/16). What was called the World Juniors, is the Now the World Youth Championships(17/18 years). Essentially it's the World Championships but for 16 year olds.
Its great but its not down to the high performance set up although that has helped this is down to the trainers at Moate amateur boing club and 90 percent of the acolades should go to them. Ward was a special talent well before high performance paid any attention to him. Not downing the HP guys at all they would be the first to say they just sharpened the talent the ward learnt from his club coahes.
Well done to young Ward. In all my years of following boxing, I can't remember us having such strength in depth from the professionals, right down to the school children. Wonderful times.
lads, Just wondering does anyone know the excat situation with dunne and peters. What stage are negotiations at and with whom? It all seems to have gone quiet. Dunne said that he was back in training 3 weeks a couple of weeks ago on the late late .
We will all know next week if McCloskey will fight for the European title in Belfast or Paris.Stayed tuned to the Irish boxing thread, Im sure someone will inform you :deal
WARD CLAIMS JUNIOR TITLE IN ARMENIA http://www.irishtimes.com/sports/other/2009/0531/1224247803193.html SUTHERLAND STOPS TCHILAIA IN THE 4TH http://www.boxingnews24.com/2009/05/sutherland-stops-tchilaia-in-the-4th/ The writer of the Sutherland piece reckons Darren will not make it as a world class supermiddle, basically the reason he gives is "the Dazzler" is too small at 5ft 9". A suggestion he then makes is for Sutherland to campaign at middleweight.I don't entirely agree with the writer, but if nothing else the article is food for thought.
