It would all be all about promotional rights in favour of Don King. Kali is jsut learning how easy it is to get shut out being a DK fighter. How many fights he's had since the Brewster fight is **** poor for someone wanting to be world champion.
i get the impression they didnt want kali to get any training in. i reckon they just said to him "kali the fight is on xxxx date. (enter pissweak amount of time) you in or out"?
Valuev and Meehan both have contracts of some kind with King right? Meehan was scheduled to fight on the undercard? So I think training would not have been an issue.... Ahh must be furstrating even from the perspective of his own fight being cancelled.
Was staying in the same hotel with Kali and can confirm that he would have gladly jumped to the pportunity of fighting Valuev. I think he'd have even willing to do it for relatively short money. However, the situation evolved less than 24 hours before the start of the scheduled show, so there was little time for a) re-negotiating TV deals which AFAIK were specifically for Valuev vs. Chagaev b) Meehan is indeed contracted to Don King, who was to arrive in Finland only the morning of the fights and refused to make the deal over the phone. Unlucky for Meehan. Contract with King is a two-edged sword - it can give you high ranking, but it also often keeps you out of the ring altogether.
Its a hard sport when you are so close to the big time but still working on the tools for a living....must be hard for Meehan.
