Great Fighters who never won a world title

Your Father was desperately unlucky to come up against the trio he did.In today's world of fragmented titles he would have added the title" World Champ" to his other battle honours ,imo.
He had the face of a school boy and the bottle and toughness of a test pilot!

Alan Rudkin, Takao Sakurai, Ray Perez, Don Johnson and any fighter of name would have been a holder of a World Title Belt

The likes of Rudkin would have been in the same position as Hatton.... raking in the $$$$ whilst defending on home soil if he chose. In some ways its a shame, in others its a testament to the calibre Alan remains.

Consider a basic example of why Alan Rudkin WOULD have been a Champ in the last 30 years... a clear reason... ALAN RUDKIN VS SATOSHI SHINIAKI.. ALAN RUDKIN VS SAMART PAYAKARYUN...

Both fight are walks in the park for Rudkin... yet, Fenech is held in esteem for the wins.

Quite a tragedy in itself.

 

Good to hear Bep's name. He is still remembered in Australia for his battle with Jack Carroll..... and he Married an Aussie gal.

 

You might be slightly biased. Alan Rudkin had two chances. Walter McGowan split two fights with him, does that make McGowan a "great" fighter IYO.

Or a tragic early death; Les Darcy and Dave Sands spring to mind.

They aren't champions, they are titleholders. There didn't used to be a distinction between the two. There is a big one now.

 

Have you ever seen McGowan in action? head to head bar cuts he gives anyone a problem.

Just a couple off the top of my head Tommy hearns at welter/middle, Sal Sanchez or Eusebio Pedroza at feather, Wilfredo Gomez.
All These 3 fighters might not have become champ if there was only one title and no super bantam title.
I consider them all great fighters.
The point I'm making is that a lot of those perennial contenders of the past can be considered "great" fighters.

I didn't ask you if he would give anyone problems. I asked you if he was a great fighter.

And if there had only be one title, they might have become undisputed champions rather than merely alphabet titleholders.

Seems to me that you are trivailizing the term "great" and the term "champ".

 

McGowan was a superb technical fighter.one of the best in the divisions history, such a shame he was one of the worst bleeders of all time.I'm a big Ohba fan but McGowan's performances against Chionoi made his effort against an aging version look crap in comparison.

There is sometimes difference between being a great fighter, and being in great fights.

Ward was a very popular exciting fighter.....

 

Georgie Benton was great in my book.
At times Rubin Carter looked great to me but to inconsistant.

Pac's a claimant to 6 divisional titles after sending Ricky to bed.... Is he superhuman.. or does the current game suffer a dose of inferiority to previous years?

IMO, the 'huge' fights we pay attention to now days are no better than the top 10 encounters in most divisions during the 50's thru 70's enroute to any single divisional title.

Nostalgia is lost via the current games pathetic title availability.
