... and will soon crown a new champ.

Wlad and Chag are willing to fight each other. They are the number 1 and 3 heavies in the worl by the ring standards, and ,many would say the number 1 and 2.

I quite like Haye, and think he will someday be a very legit contender, but he has proved nothing at heavy, has not earned a shot, and pulled out of a gift fight on a back injury that does not involve any kind of verifyable damage. I like the man, but he simply must go back ot the line now.

Valuev would not take the Wlad shot, after having a fight cancelled and being ready. All this on top of the holyfield emabarrassement. Nikki, you arer out of the picture, pure and simple.

Arreola would not take the shot. Chis, you may be a fine contender some day, but you are out of the picture.

Ruiz, Minto, Johnson, and Toney were all ready to go, but they have done nothing what-so-ever to earn it.

Many people say that Vitali has a rival claim here. I disagree profoundly. He beat a guy for the title that Wladdy beat years ago. I think Gomez was a great win, but it does not mititgate that Walddy and Chag have earned the right to be in this fight.

Wladdy has baten Byrd, Ibragimov, Brewster, and Peter. Chag has beaten Valuev and Ruiz (Virchis and Skelton also being nice legitimizing wins. Wlad has a lot of thse second tier wins, so we won't bother with naming them).

Young guys like Povetkin and Dimentrenko are on deck, but are not rival claimants yet.

The winner of Wlad-Chag is a very legiitmate champ.

I think it would be a great idea, to crown a CONTENDER.

Chag has laready beaten Valuev (who again, wanted nothing to do with WLad when offered), and Haye, though a terrific cruiser, has not proven what he needs to prove at heavy.

So yes, fine. Haye and Valuev to deicde the #1 or #2 (don't forget Povetkin) contender.

I kind of agree... At this stage I don't think many heavyweights have the power to dent Valuevs enormous chin. So I think Haye would start to get discouraged after the first few rounds finding that his power shots aren't shaking Valuev, he would either then have to go into safety mode and try to get the decision (which if he did would make him a hypocrit) or he would fade down the stretch especially carrying all that extra muscle mass and be in for a cave man beat down.

wlad-chagaev makes sense on paper, but if its another beat down, then its just more bad news for the heavyweight division.

Good post. The winner of this fight has ever right to be called the first linear heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis retired. If i'm not mistaken, the ring championship is on the line as well. Although i would've loved to see Wlad-Haye, things are shaping up nicely given circumstances. :good

I agree. It is good that it happened because now it is clear for everyone who is who.

Gotta agree with you on all points here Chris. I would've loved to see the fight.

Haye's injury is an unfortunate accident for all involved, but getting Wlad-Chagaev is really about as best of a replacement as we could've hoped to get.

Everybody who's a fan of Wlad-Haye happening for whatever reason, though, should realize that Wlad fighting Chagaev is really a blessing in disguise. Haye-Wlad is going to be that much bigger of a fight once it happens if Wlad's the lineal/ring champ because the stakes are higher (especially the reward for Haye), and the match will have had plenty of time to marinate and generate more interest. This injury is only devastating long term if Wlad-Haye never happens, and I truly don't believe that will be the case.

Plus, there's the chance we will be able to quit worrying about the WBA, which has proven to be the trickiest title to unify.

Good article on the main page:

    Wladimir Klitschko vs Ruslan Chagaev

Ruslan Chagaev is the new opponent of IBF, WBO and IBO World Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko on June 20 in the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. WBA Champion Chagaev was engaged after original fighter David Haye had pulled out due to an injury on Wednesday. The winner of the bout will receive the vacant Ring Magazine Heavyweight Championship Belt which was held by Vitali Klitschko until he retired in 2005.

„It is sad that David cannot compete. However, I am looking into the future and forward to fighting against Ruslan. He is WBA Champion, very experienced and a tough challenger. For my preparation, I have to change my sparring partner from orthodox to southpaw”, says Wladimir Klitschko..

30-year-old Chagaev captured the WBA crown from Russian Nikolay Valuev in 2007 and defended his title twice afterwards. Before, he had won the WBA elimination bout against former WBA Champion John Ruiz. Chagaev is unbeaten and has a record of 25 wins (17 by KO) and one draw.

„Last week my fight against Valuev was cancelled. Now I am fighting against Wladimir Klitschko in front of 60.000 spectators. I am looking forward to the arena in Schalke, the crowd as well as Klitschko’s three belts which I will take home with me”, says Ruslan´Chagaev.

After Haye’s pull-out, the Klitschko Management Group (KMG) has been working hard to find an equivalent opponent. “We always wanted to stick to June 20 as we do not want to disappoint the Schalke fans. Ruslan Chagaev is reigning WBA Champion and a high-class boxer. The fight night in Schalke will take place as planned and I am sure we all will have an unforgettable evening”, says Bernd Bönte, Managing Director of KMG.

Chagaev promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl (Universum): „This is a huge chance for Ruslan. Negotiations with the Klitschko Management have been very professional and quick. The planned event is simply gigantic and will find its place in the history of boxing.”

All purchased tickets for the fight night on June 20 will still be valid.

Arreola was not in shape to fight and had been out of the gym doing other things. He is not out of the picture by any stretch because of this. Taking a fight that he wasn't prepared for WOULD have taken him out though.

Mostly a good post, but let's not insinuate Arreola ****ed up by not training for a fight he wasn't scheduled for. He was on the leash long enough while Haye dicked Wald around. No way is any of this his fault.

I read via wikipedia that Chagaev and Valuev SHARE the WBA belt ... is there any truth to that?

    **and after Wlad/Chagaev June 20th

who's most likely gonna get the next crack? cuz Povetkin is the IBF mandatory, and Chambers is fighting in a WBO Eliminator.
