Not the typical sort in regards to the Road Warrior, but I'm curious how many of his fights our class posters have seen and what they feel his resume SHOULD look like instead of how it stands as of now. He of course lost several fights legitimately but when was he actually robbed? In my opinion the man has a borderline ATG resume if you give him credit for several of his close losses. Many feel he beat a undefeated Chad Dawson. I think I had Johnson edging that fight by a point, I usually score rounds where one fighter badly stuns another to the stunner between the two, and Johnson did that several times. Some feel he bat Clinton Woods 3 times. Never scored any of these but considering they all took place in the UK I wouldn't be suprised in the least. The Ottke fight was close on two of the judges scorecards, but again I haven't seen it. Thoughts?
I wouldnt say ATG even if he gets some of those close fights go his way...no where near it Saw the ottke fight...close but clear for Ottke that one. Glenn wasnt quite the fighter he would become back then. Ive seen two of the Woods fights and only bothered to watch a highlights package of the other...I had the first fight for Johnson..I didnt score the 3rd one but felt like Woods getting the nod was fine, Glenn bashed him but lost a fair few rounds. He got seriously jobbed against Judah..I scored his fight with Dawson for Chad, but it was bloody close. IMO clearly lost to Harmon and Vanderpool...I dont really remember how I felt the Sheika fight went..I just know that Omar hurt him to the body once or twice. Incidentally I thought Tarver clearly won both of their figths and Glenn was the one who got a bit of a gift in their first encounter. I think that gets overlooked a bit because no one like Tarver and I think everyone thought that Johnson got a bit of poetic justice in that fight. Havent seen the Branco, Gonzalez or Sosa fights...I think I have actually seen the Kiwanuka fight but maybe Im getting confused because I can not remember anything about it. He is very good fighter...now mixes his impressive physical strength, natural stamina and chin with a pretty basic but effective skill set..He has a bit of awkwardness about him now.
Well, Dawson's career hasn't truly taken off yet, and he's already done great things like beat Adamek down at LHW. Taking his 0 would have been huge for Johnson. Being the only blemish on Ottke's record would be substantial as well.
Ottke had closer calls then that...it wasnt controversial IMO. Reid is undoubtedly a blemish on Sven's record, as is the Brewer I and Larsen fights IMO.
Brewer is underrated in his own right to some degree. Graham was beating the **** out of him but Brewer pulled it out. He also almost killed Echols in a shoot out and the stoppage against Brewer was pretty iffy...
Here's a rundown about how I felt about the decisions I've seen him in: Sosa - Clear loss. Johnson gets off to an early lead over the first 3-4 rounds, but then falls apart after suffering a closed eye. Vanderpool - Close but clear loss. Vanderpool clinched it in the last round, if I remember right. Sheika - Close but clear loss. Johnson got off to an early lead, but seemed to "quit" after being floored in around the 4th round. (Incidentally, that's the only time I've ever seen or heard of him being down). Ottke - Close win for Johnson. Ottke just didn't do enough IMO, and as usual seemed like he was intent on only making the fight close and waiting for the hometown decision. Harmon - Clear loss. Gonzales - Clear win. Johnson just whupped him all night long. Blatant robbery IMO. Woods I - Close but clear win. Woods III - Either a close win or a draw. Tarver I - Close fight, probably could've gone either way. I thought Johnson landed more of the solid punches and deserved the decision for that. Tarver II - Close but fair loss. Dawson - Win for Johnson. Bad decision IMO. -------------------- In a nutshell, I thought he was blatantly robbed against Gonzales, and his losses/draws against Ottke, Dawson, and Woods (both fights) were questionable at least to some extent. At the same time though, he has legit losses to guys like Harmon, Sosa, Sheika, Vanderpool, and Tarver. The problem with calling him an ATG off of beating Ottke is that you could make a case that about 3-4 other fighters should've beaten Ottke as well. I think it says more about what Ottke really was than Johnson.
I was at all the Woods fights and the Chad fight(literally feet away) I thought the Woods x3 were fair results, but i think Johnson just edged it over Dawson.
I thought Johnson won the third fight. Woods got the benefit of the doubt in some of the close rounds. And perhaps the draw, and Johnson winning the rematch played on the minds of the judges.
The robbery in the Branco fight wa sdisgraceful. The italian fans themselves booed the decision and almost had a riot in there.Gianluca had to talk to them while Silvio did the post fight interview where the italian commentators themselves mocked him.You could see Silvio himself knew he got a gift.
Bump for Johnson's recent amazing feat of making a weight he hadn't in 10 years at a very advanced age. :happy:happy
1. On a rounds basis I dont think he did enough 2. Yes he beat Woods 3 times, jobbed twice, those were closish but clear wins for him 3. I didnt score it but thought Glen got the best of it. Thought he beat Branco (clear robbery), Gonzalez, Sheika
Tough, strong, crafty, which is enough to give most of today's fighters problems. A big fan of his work and I hope he will make history by winning the Super Six tournament, cementing himself as one of the best ever 40+ year old fighters and certainly the most unique of the lot as his style is to put on pressure at all times. I doubt it will happen but he looked good in his 168 re-debut against the very poor Allan Green.
