Was Pernell Whitaker high when he fought De La Hoya?

It just seems like he was on another plane of existence during that fight. At one point he throws a punch, misses Oscar, and looks at his glove and says something like "what the ****s your problem". I just found his behavior in that fight strange is all. You think he was on the stuff? I mean he was talking to his gloves you have to raise an eyebrow.

I think he resented not being considered quite as great as he perhaps thought that he should have been.

Fighting the Golden Boy of boxing was the perfect opportunity to prove that he existed on a higher plane to all other, mere mortal fighters, hence the odd behavior.

(also why he lost the fight, btw).
