Wow. I can't remember a year where there so many postponements due to injuries. Former world champion Jorge 'Travieso' Arce of Mexico is heading to Atlantic City, N.J. Arce will take on Fernando Lumacad of the Philippines on Top Rank's Latin Fury 9' championship boxing event at the Boardwalk Hall. Caesars Atlantic City is hosting. The Arce vs. Lumacad super flyweight fight will replace the Fernando Montiel vs. Eric Morel title fight. Montiel, the WBO bantamweight champion from Mexico, is out with a hand injury. "The plan is to move the Montiel title fight to a new date, perhaps in September," said Bob Arum of Top Rank. The Arce vs. Lumacad fight was initially scheduled for Friday, June 20 in Tijuana. When Montiel's injury was confirmed today, the Arce fight was moved to Latin Fury 9.
Yeah, it has been a strange month. I've never seen four postponements\cancellations in a single month ... Maybe its something going around.
Oh for Chrissakes, WTF? - Wlad-Haye - Kotelnik-Khan - Mayweather-Marquez - Montiel-Morel I was wondering if we had enough quality fights left and now Montiel injures himself. Pretty bad week for boxing.
too bad, so it seems that penalosa would have no fight at least for the rest of the year...montiel is still the champ...the morel-arce winner would be the interim champ while penalosa is the madatory
And let me tell ya it ain't helping Arce either. Having the mexican crowd behind him would have been a lot better but with Nacho I think he''ll be ok.
Seriously, there's little reason to even have this card anymore. The two most compelling fights on the card (this and Malignaggi vs. Alvarado) have both been cancelled. Now it's a PDL showcase, an Arce showcase, and Yuri Foreman vs. Cornelius Bundrage.
Sounds like Arum is indirectly setting things up for September. If by some ungodly reason he manages to get Pavlik vs Mora, he'll throw Morel vs Montiel on THAT card. Anyways there's something intriguing about Morel vs Arce...and I really REALLY hope that Arce manages to pull out the win and then retire so as to go out on a happy note.
I wish it was Arce vs. Morel, but it's Arce against some Pinoy who's never beaten anyone with more than 10 wins.
Yeah just re-read it. Guess I got excited at the idea that Arce vs Morel with the winner taking on Montiel. The truly interesting thing is that this PPV will tell us a lot about how big the PR fan base really is when it comes to buying PPVs. If this is able to crack 50K, I have to imagine Arum would be thrilled.
