Duran was a great fighter and deserves every accolade he gets. Perhaps if he would have survived a little longer, Tommy would have punched himself out for a short period, and Duran could have capitalized or at least slowed Tommy down as he was beginning to land some body shots.

Either way, point is Duran was great.

Have you actually ever seen Duran's fights ?

You sound like someone paddling around with one oar and a book !!!!

Duran was a lightweight when he fought Buchanan and a middleweight when he met the feared middleweight champ Hagler who he lost a split 15 rd decision.
Also beat Davy Moore and took the middleweight title from Iran Barkley as middleweight.
He beat the best in the lightweight division.....Buchanan wasn't the only good lightweight.

How can you say he was overrated?

I always said he was overrated. His LW career was mediocre and the guys there were not better than Virgil Hills level of competition at light heavyweight, and Virgil had over 20 defenses. Then Duran losses to all the greats in the 1980s. Overrated. yeah possibly. His resume does not warrant top 5 of all time. No way.

he wasn't landing bodyshots on Tommy. He landed a a right hand below the belt and then Tommy started to come to him and Duran landed a decent counter right and then Tommy just unloaded punch after punch until Duran was knocked out. Not a close fight and Duran had no chance.

no one said he is not a legend, but the question was is he overrated. I think he is. He is still great ,but not top 5 ever. His wins are not a top 5 fighters wins. He needed more . Dejesus? A young Leonard? Moore and Barkley? That makes him top 5 ever? Others might not think so. But what is his best win? Leonard? Ray fought Duran's fight and Duran couldn't knock him out. Then Duran quits right as Ray is starting to land punches to the body and head in round 8. The fight with Ray was not a knockout. He hardly dominated an inexperienced Ray in the first fight, and all Ray had to do was adjust and fight his fight and he outsped and outclassed Duran. In a way that shows Duran was overrated. If people rated him top 30 ever I might say he is not overrated. But top 5. No way.

How? What did Duran do to rate him with Ali who beat Frazier (stopped him) and Foreman(stopped him) and liston (stopped him). Duran's resume is just not there to be top 3. How do you warrant that? His lightweight reign? Lampkin? How? When he moved up in weight he lost to all the legends.

No it isn't. I have thought it for years. He is totally overrated because he was Duran. A great personality who destroyed guys and knew how to looked devastating. But when he stepped up in competition he looked ordinary. That is the difference between his lightweight reign and Hearns and Leonard. He was not that old when he fought Ray in 1980.. just turned 29. he fought Hearns at 32 and he fought until he ws 50.

Yep.A natural(atg) LW who was competitive with Hagler and Benitez and defeated Leonard,Palomino,Cuevas,Moore and Barkley is no way overrated.

No one is denying his greatness. The question was is he overrated? And in my mind he is. It's obvious. If he was top 3 ever he would have beaten Ray in the rematch. Not been stopped by Hearns or beaten by Benitez easily, and he would have won the Hagler fight. That is top 3 ever, not a guy who loses to them all. Duran was great , but overrated he was.
