Remember back in 03 when Margarito wanted to fight Mayorga??

Marg became top tier when he demolished an Olympian and 2 time world time world champion Miguel Cotto , probably gave Williams the 2nd most difficuilt 12 rounds of his life behind Quintana and has beaten Josh Clottey , in my mind that makes him top tier not elite but top tier there is a difference .

Mayorga also dominated an olympian and undisputed welterweight champion Vernon Forrest coming off two major wins over Mosley and those two wins are far better than Margarito's over Cotto. Piccirillo is another solid underrated win.

Mayorga was also giving Mosley a very tough/close fight before getting KO'd in the 12th and was giving Spinks a tough fight too. We all know what happened to the same version of Mosley that Margarito fought.

In terms of in ring ability Margarito is nothing but a one-dimensional predictable fighter with no defense but excellent stamina/activity and a very good chin. If you have what it takes to back him off he's immediately lost and doesn't know what to do. A top tier fighter should at least be able to adapt, not necessarily adapt to anything his opponent brings but show something different when he's cornered in a bad situation.

one of the best schooled pure boxers in forrest got repeatedly tagged, and could'nt defend against mayorga's bull rush flurries. whats antonio "no tiene defensa" margarito gonna do? he'd eat a lot of bombs.

I don't see why not. People have given me **** before for suggesting Mayrga could still make welter...I think they're not really looking at the facts. He looked perfectly healthy making 153 against Shane. Despite his lifestyle, he's never Hattoned between campaigns. Not sure where the fuss is coming from. :conf

InentionalButt Mayora is a big big big man. I believe prior to his fight with Vargas he started training camp close to 180lbs. I remember watching a sort of "countdown" video before the fight and I am pretty certain Mayorga said he was 170lbs a month or so before the fight.

 

And at the Mosley weigh in he might have looked fine, but the second he stepped off the scales he was hugging a pedialyte bottle like a crack fiend.
