    That's an adjustable wrench. Absolutely NO ONE calls it a "spanner" here in the states.

    Ask anyone in the USA if that tool is a spanner or an adjustable wrench. Also known as a crescent wrench due to the shape of it's head & also one of the many companies that manufacture them. I believe Crescent company may have invented them...............
