Greedy promoters but I also have a feeling Bob Arum didn't want to take another risk with Pavlik after the Hopkins fight...
Couple things happened. Abraham was making a lot of money fighting bums in Germany, he didn't need to Pavlik fight to keep making money, by the time it became time for Abraham to take the next step Pavlik was already set to fight Hop, which he lost.. losing the luster of this fight. Sturm is a bum, and the Castelijo fight proved this, he takes a fight with Abraham or Pavlik who he knows he can't beat and his gravy train comes to a halt with his 3rd loss. He's not going to do it, financially he doesn't need those fights, because it'd have to be enough to make up for main eventing future fights against bums. Sturm is a 2nd tier fighter, no question.
Thankfully here in the states people are becoming less likely by the day to pay for **** matchups (e.g. Top Rank having to put on their own shitty PPVs). We have had some tremendous fights this year because of this. However, if Euro fight fans are more than happy to watch their champs spark out bums every three months then the boxing community gets screwed. I won't put all the blame on them either though as fighters as a whole ought to be more open to fighting outside their "homes" and taking on riskier fights. Its also the casual fans fault quite honestly because they have the mentality that a loss is a death sentence and promoters are scared as hell now to get their fighter in the ring with someone that could take away the gravy train.
The majority of fans and writers blame Arum, but they do that without ever questioning the veracity of Sauerland's statements or Arthur's statements. On June 28th Kalle Sauerland told Boxing Scene.Com that Arthur Abraham would stay at 160 until he got a crack at Pavlik. That made sense because they previously said a January 2010 date would be fine with them, and AA showed zero signs of weight drain in the Oral fight. A very short time later we got the news that AA will be in the SMW tournament fighting two time Pavlik victim Jermain Taylor; a man who lost 3 of his last 4 fights, and has a record of 1 win and 2 losses at or near the SMW limit. Do you think Sauerland put this tourney together and secured Arthur's place in it in one week? When Dan Rafael ask Sauerland about a KP/AA fight in Germany, Sauerland said, "If we had known he [Pavlik] was interested in a fight in Germany, we would have made him an offer." Sauerland did not say, 'we offerred him X amount to fight in Germany." He said, "If . . . . . we would have." In other words Sauerland Entertainment NEVER offered Pavlik a fight in Arthur's biggest, most lucrative market. Does that sound like they were seriously tryiing to make the fight? Take a peak at the actual history of Arthur's undefeated record. Jermain Taylor offered AA a fight in the spring of 2007. Sauerland made Abraham/Demers. In the spring of 2008 Zuniga was rearing to go, and had vacated his IBO title for the shot. Sauerland made a fight with Elvin Ayala. In the spring of 2009 Winky Wright wanted a shot, and had HBO's attention. Sauerland low balled Winky, and made a fight with LuJaun Simon. That brings us to the present. Sauerland said AA was staying at 160 until he got a Pavlik fight, and that a date early next year would be fine. Abraham is moving up to fight two time Pavlik victim Jermain Taylor; a figher most people believe is ruined. Consider the history, consider the present, and then you tell me why KP/AA never got made.
Agreed. More specifically, Bob Arum. If Pavlik loses against Abraham, that money train is dead. But if he cherry picks opponents, he can ride out this money train for a few more years. I think Abraham and his people were willing but Arum was not after the schooling Pavlik got from Hopkins.
That just puts him in the same league as Green. Call's em out and doesn't fight em..... Remember how Green called out Bute at ringside, made a big production of it and then said he would prefer to fight Froch? Now who is he fighting? NO ONE!
Bob Arum never wanted any of it, after the Hopkins disaster he wouldn't risk it knowing that Abraham has a great chance to get a KO. I mean it should be VERY clear they want none of it when they consider Sturm and ignore Abraham.
They never fought because Arum was too scared to lose one of his fighters. Pav himself is not afraid of Abraham, but his promoter was...:-(
Zuniga was never appointed as the "official" mandatory. He was appointed to a title eliminator. The opponent got hurt in training camp and pulled out, thereby ELIMINATING himself. Sauerland made a fight with Ayala, and the IBF allowed it. Zuniga got ****ed. Come back here and tell me with a straight face that the great Elvin Ayala is a more dangerous or more worthy opponent! Sauerland/Abraham take the easier/softer route everytime out. That's not opinion or speculation. It is a historical fact.
I never said Zuniga was the official mandatory. I assumed that any boxing fan, who actually keeps up with the news, would know the story. I said many times Zuniga was the "rightful" mandatory. And in any world where things are fair, he would have got his shot. However, with the singular exception of Miranda, Sauerland has kept anyone and everyone who can crack a bit away from Abraham. That is a fact, check his resume.
