There is no such thing as a 'glass jaw' or a 'weak chin'

I'm just man enough to admit when I'm wrong.

Doesn't mean I don't enjoy arguing the counterpoint just for the hell of it, though.

However you want to dress it up or whatever descriptive word you want to use some people do have naturally weaker punch resistance.

You really think Khan was unlucky to be caught by Willie Limond, a cuffing shot by Gomez, knocked out brutally by Prescott, did the chicken dance in the amateurs?

And Oliver McCall was just lucky to take punch after punch from big heavyweights?

    Nah.

Your factors do of course help, being in proper shape helps the bodys strength. Ultimately, there is always a bottleneck of natural punch resistance.

People really need to stop fixating on 'glass jaws' though.

So a fighter has a 'glass jaw', so ****ing what? It's not his fault, and he's trying to work around it, why not focus on boxing eh? :patsch

Man I thought I'd seen it all. This takes the "that punch woulda KOd anybody" nonsense to NEW levels of absurdity.

Yes, there is such a thing as a glass jaw, and quite a few fighters have them!

Yeah.... but why hate on them?

Take the **** by all means, but hating someone just because they aren't Marvin Hagler or Oliver McCall in the chin stakes is just ******ed.

Exactly right. I testify that there 100% certainly IS such a thing as a glass chin, and i know this with so much certainty because well.....i have one myself, unfortunately.
And trust me, i train 52 weeks a year, i'm always in shape, it has nothing to do with my conditioning.

sorry to disappoint you but there is such a thing as a weak jaw.same as there are people who can take a body shot better than others etc.

What about brain size to skull ratio, Cerebrospinal fluid quantity, skull weight/dimensions/thickness, development of the neck muscles, variations in nerve sizes/strength of signal to the brain, natural body balance?

I agree in part with what you're saying Hoya, mental conditioning is a huge bonus to any boxer but I believe it has to be coupled with the physical attributes, some of which are natural and can't be altered to a great degree if at all.

Interesting question. I believe there are those with better punch resistance than others.

I think it's also clear that if you're getting tired, and you (as a boxer) are breathing in through an open mouth, you're much easier to lay out than if your chin is tucked in and your jaw firm.

Using Khan as an example, he spent most of his early fights with his jaw lolling open. It was only a matter of time before someone popped him firmly enough to stop him being a fool. Note that he didn't against Kotelnik.

Punch resistance has a lot to do with conditioning, though in some cases conditioning might not play a role in improvement. This has a lot to do with how many punches a specific fighter had to absorb, look at Hopkins, the guy barely allowed fighters to land and land flush on him so he can carry on even at the age of 44. There are also some rare cases where fighters who took a lot can still take the same if not more at an old age, McCall, Foreman, Holyfield, Tyson, Ali and others all come to mind.

The more punches you take and the more you're KO'd the easier it is to hit the canvas in future fights or get KO'd. Some fighters have terrible punch resistances by default despite conditioning, look at Hearns, the guy was a gym rate and always came in top form mentally and physically yet his ability to take a punch was poor.
