I`ve already watched the Harold Johnson/Eddie Machen fight earlier this morning, and what a beautiful, technical boxing match that was. I also watched the Hiroyuki Ebihara/Jose Severino bout today, which while not a great fight per se is one of those fights which I enjoy watching every now and then.

I love that little Jap`s style, always darting in and out of range of his opponents and letting fly with multi punch combinations whenever he was in mid-range, and that straight left of his was ever dangerous at all times.I plan on watching all three Saldivar/Winstone fights later this afternoon, as well as the Tony DeMarco-Kid Gavilan and Gavilan-Saxton bouts tonight.

Wilfredo Gomez vs Royal Kobayashi - Not one of the finer fighters Gomez defeated but I still found it to be quite an impressive performence by the very young Gomez. For being only 21 years old and fighting in the challengers home country Japan I felt Gomez showed great poise. The first round and half I felt he boxed rings around Kobayashi displaying solid ring generalship and beating the wild punches of Kobayashi to the punch with stiff jabs whilst also making him miss alot with good upperbody movement. Halfway into the 2nd round Kobayashi gets the fight on the inside like he wanted but Gomez owned him there as well with nice hooks to the body. 3rd round early on Gomez drops him hard with a totally wicked left hook and drops him twice more with right hands and finishes him. Agian not the best win in terms of oppostion but impressive anyway over a guy who was still a former Champion.

Wilfredo Gomez vs Carlos Zarate - Both guys took the feeling out process well into the 2nd round, Gomez cornered Zarate with less then a minute to go in the 2nd proceeded to let his hands go effectivily which brought out the fight in Zarate also. In the 3rd Gomez starts to land that right hand with great effect and in so many different ways like right hand then left hook, left hook - right hand, lead right hands, jab or even double jab then right, back up then step in with a counter right. In the 4th he drops him with a savage left hook and agian he drops Zarate as the round comes to close. 5th starts and Gomez could not miss with brutal right hands or left hooks, Drops Zarate agian when Zarates corner steps in and fight is over. Gomez had such great consistent energy here and his timing was flawless Zarate had nothing for him. Zarate never appeared to be the same after this beating IMO. Ive always heard he had difficulty making weight for this fight I wonder if it had an effect although I doubt it mattered.

Zarate was close to unbeatable at Bantamweight but he was biting off more than he could chew by moving up and taking on the likes of Gomez. He did indeed have trouble making the weight, and that is always a really bad sign a head of an already tough assignment. He probably would have lost anyhow but it certainly didn't help him. We know that much.

I watched Carbajal vs Gonzalez 1. One of the greatest fights of all time, and I just love to see Michael fight. He was a dynamic, murderous hitter with two fisted power. Nice personality in his interviews. I wish he could have beat Gonzalez all three times, but it just weren't to be.

Well the las fight i watched was Khan vs Kotelnik (sorry classic forum!), I'll say this, and i've always thought this, in terms of skillset on offense, i don't tnink Khan is particualarly amazing, but he is very fast, strong and has workrate, which serves him well. But in terms of lateral movement and counterpunching on the outside, i think his skillset is naturally class. If i was wanting Khan to win all his fights, i'd want him to use that approach to them, he is very fast on his toes, his lateral movement comes naturally to him, and he can find skillful counters, uppercuts etc, and capitalise.

An opposite to Miguel Cotto imo, who i find is more effective on offense than in boxing mode.

    yeh Teeto Khan was good

i thought he lacked the ability to box off the back foot though. He moved around then came forward with a flurry then repeated. I thought Kotelnick made an excellant adjustment in the 3rd, 4th and 5th and troubled Khan but Khan adjusted and was unstoppable from then on

Yeah his lateral movement was what won him the fight wasn't it? Just like Roach said, i know he never boxed off the foot in this fight, but that's because Kotelnik is not a man who chases you and plays into that trap. The getting punches off and then moving away, as you said, was the way to fight this fight. But i like Khan to use lateral movement and just counter when the time calls for it to be honest, i think his reflexes whilst in that mindset are underrated as well. There's always going to be that thing about him getting ko'd if he comes to fight even if he does seem to be taking a shot better at this weight, he hasn't faced a big puncher here yet either has he? I think his career might be a drama packed one and exciting to watch.

Hope he smashes the **** out of Ricky Hatton, think he might as well.

Anyway, you know the rules in these threads mate, you don't reply to people, you just post! Haha, sorry.

I continued my week long look at Wilfredo Gomez fights this is day 2 every week I wanna take a good look at a legend that ive not seen as much as I should.

Wilfredo Gomez vs Juan Antonio Lopez 1 - Gomez outboxes him early and does it so well I love watching him he moves around the ring beautifully I could watch this guy just shadowbox his movement for hours. He picks up the pace late in the 2nd mauling Lopez to the body. Round 3 more good work for Gomez especially with strong lead right hands. Round 4 Gomez dominates near the end with alot of violent combos with Lopezs back near the ropes. Round 5 the pace picks up alot Lopez is cut and Gomez is trying hard to knock him out with right hands but Lopez is game and taking them pretty well. Something I noticed in this round is how great Gomez is with his angles its masterful. Round 6 Gomez basically takes the 1st half off and rest alittle letting Lopez punch himself out before coming back and attacking him hard to the body especially with the left hook, then he slows down at the end of the round showing a bit of fatigue. Round 7 with about 25 secounds to go Gomez has Lopez in the corner and attacks him relentlessly with combos until the ref steps in and stops it.

Solid all around performence by Wilfredo Gomez but not as impressive as the ones I viewed last night. Soon ill take a look at his bout with Lupe Pintor.
