Today while sparring I was hurt for the first time. Now when I say sparring it's more like a gym war, we go full force. The dude had heavy hands and only the first shot hurt me, it really got me off guard.

However, when he took off his gloves I noticed duck tape instead of hand wraps.

How big of an advantage would that give him?

Im no expert but i would think none. Duct tape is just to normaly keep hand wraps in place. Doesnt make a fist any harder. You got rocked cos the guy hits hard. Same thing happened to me. Im a beginner ( especially to sparring). I got rocked badly the other week by a guy much bigger and is already getting a rep for one of if not the hardest hitter in the gym. He also busted my nose. really annoying cos i cant hate him cos hes a really sound guy lol:lol:

I have a question - who determines how hard you both want to go during a training spar?

be careful sparring it can take years off your career if you do it too often and too hard, i only spar when i have a fight coming up and even then do body sparring too, look at philadelphia fighters if you want to see the result of too many gym wars

Shouldnt really be going full force when sparring with buddies in your own gym much less gettin rocked. Should just be exhausted after with maybe a cut lip or bloody nose, no broken jaws or anything... Save if for the bag and competition.

    thnx for the advice guys.

It is a mutual agreement between us fighters and trainers to go all out when sparring. The trainer always ask before and during the sparring how we feel mentally and physically. In fact, nobody noticed that I was hurt or it would definitely have been stopped. On this occasion it gave me a confidence boost, the guy is a pro with 10 fights and I'm only an amateur. So mentally I feel better prepared.

Again, thnx for the concern guys.

you need a gym war every once in a while...just not 4 times a week.......

so i think u doing the right thing....

if you defense sucks and you are always getting rocked then maybe u should cut down on gym wars.
