Jones GREAT? or very good and marketed well ?

Roy Jones is certainly a great boxer...........................my problem is the fact that so many good fights were never made...................Roys fault.............maybe...............maybe not.......one thing for sure..........we the public, missed out out possible some of the greatest fights.....that wern't in the 90's..................................Examples why? Why was there no fights made between Nigel Benn, Gelald McClellan, Chris Eubanks and Julian Jackson just to name a few.......................................................
Here is a very interesting quote:
Jones began 1999 by knocking out New York City police officer Rick Frazier. After this, many boxing critics[who?] started to criticize Jones for fighting overmatched mandatories who few had ever heard of. Roy Jones continued a career of low PPV numbers. He was also criticized for never fighting Dariusz Michalczewski, an unbeaten Polish fighter who had been stripped of the WBA & IBF championship belts in 1997 without losing them in the ring. In Jones' only other fight that year, on June 5, he beat the IBF's world champion, Reggie Johnson, by a lop-sided 12-round decision to add that belt to the WBC and WBA belts he already owned in the division.

This is true.....and mainstream boxing enthusiast know it

Great. No matter what the revisionists may want you to think.

roy was marketed terribly to be honest. or at least all the HBO hype didn't help him become a draw.

The rick frazier fight was an anamoly. If you look at his record he fought a LOT of very good fighters, Reggie included.

Roy's problem was that he thought he was bigger than he was and saw no reason to deal with other fighters because 1) he was better than them (maybe) 2) he was a bigger draw than them (DEFINITELY not).

Roy could have and probably would have beaten jackson, eubank, mcclellan, DM, and steve collins and nigel benn for good measure. A better manager and promoter would have let him

however you want to look at it...he was one of the most gifted fighters of his era. there was a stretch of time there where he was untouchable

yup probably. and a prime calzaghe would have put up a hell of a fight. jones preferred to put on exhibitions rather than engage in wars. the fact is even the elites he fought he ended up putting on exhibitions against

Greatest of his generation no doubt. It took 14 years before we found out he had a weak chin.

Great fighter incredibly gifted no one can deny the talent. It's unfortunate he never fought McClellan, Eubank, Jackson all of those guys would of picked him over all of them but he never fought them. Especially McClellan they were both in their prime and practically superman god i wish that fight had taken place.

Definitely think he's overrated as a Light Heavy, but yeah he was great. He coasted as P4P champ for years because he convinced people he could only lose the title in the ring when he was obviously not the best fighter anymore. Unfortunately he's now the model for how to maximize cash and minimize risks by talking a lot and basically messing with peoples minds (other boxers and fans included). Floyd is like a clone of Jones when it comes to negotiation/mind games/ego. it irritated me then and still does cause i feel like they're trading part of their legacy for cash.

Just very very fast... But he didn't have the "Boxing skills" most think he did.
(He just happened to have what most have not/will not reflex & speed)
