Was Roy Jones Jr great or just very good and marketed well?

Speed kills, when he lost it, he got ran over himself.

 

he held the lineal title i'm aware but no one really thought he was THE CHAMP at 175. if he's not the real champ, he's a paper champ. done

 

Don't forget he beat Tarver in his prime.

Roy was absolutely great. Not perfect (no fighter is), not unbeatable. Some of those flaws that people suspected began to get taken advantage of at the tail end of his career, and it would've been nice to see a few more bigger fights made with him that never got made, but I tend to look on the bright side: Roy had the kinds of accomplishments and still had the resume that make the "great" moniker well deserved. Would I have loved to see him against the DMs, Benns, Calzaghes, Eubanks, or the Mclellans out there? Of course! But that still doesn't undo the good fighters he did beat and how he beat them.

There gets to be a point, for many fans, where it becomes easy to make an excuse for why their guy lost. With great fighters like Roy, it's almost always the other way around- people come up with excuses for why he fought so well by picking apart his opponents. That's a good sign to know you've arrived when people go from making excuses for you to making them for your opposition.

 

He was great and without a doubt my absolute favourite fighter

 

Great boxer, his amateur feats at Seoul 1988 are part of the proof. Unfortunately he wasn't a heavyweight and finding a big market is always a big effort in that case.

Jones was with his speed like foreman and shavers were with their power.
Jones' speed was just naturally superhuman
IMO as far as being a tactician, hopkins is better than jones
and then we got the whole "jones ducked a hopkins rematch" and "jones ducked DM"
but he did fight well

Fought Ruiz who was not much of a champion...with his ref, that did not allow the Champ to do his thing.......ok....so I'm pushing it a bit here....but I never heard any one think that Ruiz was much....Someone The Toy Bulldog Walker could have beaten.
Dodged his manditorys at Heavy Tua and Vitili.
Never had the fight with Jerov nor Douglas though said he wanted to fight them....but they wanted money.

Does not want to be Champion now....might have to fight some one who can breath and punch at the same time.

Some body as washed up as Robinson, was looking for the belt....of course it was The Belt back then....all the way to his last fight, had he won, he'd gotten a Old Timer's ticket to a champion ship fight.

Difference between the One and Only World Champ and one who never unified at any weight and never tried.


Can you explain why some one with all his money, would be fighting "exhibition" fights vs idiots, instead of being a Champion and trying to be Champion?
