I feel you on that, but on the other hand sometimes if you have to make the fight as fair as it can be.

agreed with 17 divisions in boxing, it's not like catchweights are exactly needed

and it's not like that stopped big fights in the past from happening

**plus how many historic catchweight bouts are there to begin with?

reading the article posted by you and I haven't completed it but the article kind of helps to prove my point regarding the negativity toward catcwheights

take the Vargas-Mayorga bout, held at a catchweight... while entertaining the whole build up to the fight was more like a side show .. with both men even having to be seperated by a large piece of plexi glass at a press conference

**granted that's one example of a catchweight fight

but other CW bouts (Pavlik-Hopkins, Jones-Trinidad or Hopkins-Winky)

don't really prove anything in the grand scheme of things as all the above bouts just proved that the losing fighter, could not fight 2 weight divisions outside their normal weight

*as Pavlik, Trinidad and Wink spent time at Middle, but of course fighting at 170 would be 2 weight classes higher.

    BUMP

    still reading your article

damn didn't know catchweights had such a legacy in the sport.

I hope it doesn't become the "new" thing

cuz the past 2 years have featured a lot of catchweight fights .. with many of them being PPV

    i.e.

    Hopkins-Wink
    Hopkins-Pavlik
    Taylor-Pavlik
    Trinidad-Jones

were all in one year and all PPV. plus showtime had the Abraham/Miranda 166 bout. and of course Mayorga/Vargas

then this year there's Cotto-Pacquiao, PBF-JMM and Malignaggi-Diaz in August.

I never really understood WHY they exist. I guess when 1 guy is heavier they try and split the difference in weight?

yeah I thought the saying went "weight divisions exist for a reason"

oppose to "catchweight's exist for a reason"

boxing gets clowned on enough with the numerous "World Titles", obscene amount of weight divisions, corrupt promoters, bad judging and etc

I just see catchweights as another thing to use against boxing

yes they've been around a long time, but so what .. boxing has weight classes for a reason right?

If they have catch weight fights it shouldn't be for any championship titles. The Miguel Cotto fight should not be for his belt because Manny is not really going up to Welterweight. If he wins this fight it would give him a championship in a weight class he never really fought in.

Its ridiculous. That is the thing that the UFC has over boxing. The less weight classes the better the fights would be. Also of course just one boxing federation would be great but anyways this has been preached all over and it will never change.
With all the weight classes we have already why a catchweight?

pac is defending his p4p title. if he losses, he is no longer the p4p king. He has the right to choose his own weight limit...

This fight for the p4p championship I got no problem with it but for Cotto welterweight belt I got a problem with that because Pacman is not really fighting at the welterweight he's fighting in between it.

What do I think? Catchweight fights are meant to make money. Period.

It forces two big named fighters from different weigh classes to fight. It is what it is.
