Is Cotto able to weigh as much as he wants come fight night?

I want to know this as well, i heard rumors before the fight was confirmed that Cotto wouldn't be able to rehydrate beyond a certain limit on fight night.

 

As far as im aware the rule is you can't weigh any more than 14lbs over your weigh in weight on fight night whether or not your name is cotto.

This has been legislation since Arturo Gatti was 19lbs over on fight night vs Gamache

 

hmmn.. never heard of this, but i think he can balloon all he want

 

He should be able to go up as much as he wants because hes going down a couple pounds below his weight class and it could possibly be difficult to make those extra two pounds so I think it would be logical for him to rehydrate to wherever he wants

 

I'm also a fan of both.

Slightly more of a pacfan, actually, but like them both.

That said, the fight should be at 147 with all the usual rules regarding weigh-in.

I keep hearing about how little difference 2 lb will make to Cotto.

If that's so, the converse must also be true.

How much difference will a 2 lb heavier Cotto make to Pac?


We have 17 weight categories, more than enough.

This should be for a title. For Pac, if it isn't and he wins, it'll be like climbing Mt Everest and turning back a hundred feet from the top.

To have the title and have it legitimately, you need to win it without putting unfair barriers in the way of the current title holder.

There is a 147 lb division. If you force the 147 lb champ to fight at 140 or 143 or 145, can you call yourself the 147 lb champ ?

And if Pac picks up the title with 145 forced as the weight, at what weight will the defences take place ?

If 147, then the Cotto fight will be seen clearly as not having been fair.

If 145, then the division will have been converted (de facto) to 145.



It's in Pac's interest that this fight take place at 147 and with a belt at stake.


If 2lb makes such little difference, fight at the limit already set out.


Or fight a non-title catchweight bout.

I know which one I'd rather watch.

 

It shouldnt be but with those catchweight fights you can overtrain and go down more than you want to because your simply focused on making that weight so a lot of fighters deprive themselves and stuff just to make the weight

 

I don't see what difference 1 pound is going to make, but if he can't rehydrate passed a certain point then that's bull****.... I can deal with 14 pounds, but anything less than that is pushing it

 

I think they should just fight at 147. Thus killing any after fight BS.

It's Cotto who has the throne here (the welterweight title that might be on the line). If you're referring to Pac's lb4lb #1 spot, its

a) a subjective assessment and not a 'title'

b) In any case, won't be on the line. A Cotto victory will probably not give him the lb4lb # 1 spot.

IF he's trying to do what hasn't been done before, do it all the way.

If 2lb makes so little difference, fight at 147 and for the title.

Then, the detractors will not have the excuse that he won the title unfairly.


If he wins at 145, the victory will be good.

But he won't be a legitimate welterweight champion.

Welterweight limit is 147.
