Interesting potential matchup I thought. Floyd Patterson of say 1958 versus Charles of 49-50. Both very similarly sized. One of the rare instances where Charles fights a faster fighter. Floyd fights out of that peak a boo style while Charles is as technical and textbook as you can get. Charles would get the edge in durability, but Floyd would have a very slight edge in power and I believe Patterson has the better left hook. Who do you have in this interest matchup? This would be the best pure technical boxer Floyd has ever fought while this could one of the most skilled fighters Charles has fought. I'll go with Floyd in a decision. Does anybody have Charles in this type of matchup? I know there are loads of Charles fans (Me being one actually. I like Floyd too). We have to take note that Floyd's passiveness would be the most comfortable environment for Charles.
It would be interesting for sure. Charles could slug with the best of them at his weight. He basicaly went toe to toe with most of the best heavyweights of his era and generaly beat them at that game. This could turn into an all out war and might perhaps produce a trilogy.
Agreed, though my vote would have to go with Charles to get the better of any number of fights that the two men had..
1950 Charles was too smart, experienced and versatile to lose to a Patterson who would later be surprised by Ingo's use of a jab and attempt to slug it out with Liston. 1958 Floyd was not as resourceful as the veteran campaigner he was to later become as a former champion.
