Jack Dempsey. The most overrated ATG of all time.

Has he got a good record. NO.
Was he a good fighter. **** yeah.
He should be up with the best but he is not purely on who he didnt fight. The fact is he takes the likes of Hopkins at any stage of his career. Gives RJJ one hell of a fight. And whoever else you put him up against around his weight class.
The guy was the real deal.

Dempsey MIGHT be overrated but that has a lot to do with his style in the ring and when you have guys like Mike Tyson mention him like they relate to him style-wise, fans tend to pay attention quickly.

Think it's fair to say he's mentioned far more than Sugar Ray Robinson in typical boxing discussions.

It's all about style, you can be a great fighter but if your style excites the public you will be rated higher just for that.

exactly. it works for and against fighters and it's tough to guard against when rating fighters. i personally think dempsey's overrated too based on two performances: firpo and willard. they just happen to be some of the most thrilling offensive performances of all time

James Toney is not an ATG, but if he were Calzaghe has a much better legacy than fatty who lost to fighters Joe would have beaten with his eyes closed.

Joe would've finished Evander? 'chea. Yeah Right.
Joe would've gone 24 rds with Sam Peter at HW & beaten him? 'chea. Yeah Right.
Joe would've been able to be ultra-competitive with Hasim Rahman? 'chea. Yeah Right.

Hasim Rahman would've hit JoeCal with a big right and that would be that.
JoeCal never had great defense y'know? And great defense is the reason why Toney has gotten so close to a Heavyweight title & been so successful, even as a fatguy who DESERVES a sponorship deal with Burger King & is worth of being cornered by The King himself every fight since he first moved up past 175.

Also, even if Joe got up after being knocked down for the first time (and I promise you, Hasim Rahman would knock him down), he wouldn't get up the 2nd or 3rd time (he's no Marquez, sorry).

Only Toney-conqueror that Calzaghe would've really pissed on woulda been Montel Griffin.
    But that's about it.

He'd have beat Drake Thadzi too but Toney is still by far the better fighter. Calzaghe was not an ATG. He was a fraud in that sense.

Why Tito? Because Calzaghe beat Hopkins?

Could you imagine the criticism Calzaghe would get on this board had he actually lost one of those fights?
