Between my avatar and my constant defending of Kessler I have to say that I am surprised that this is the first time anybody has asked me that question when in fact, I had anticipated it a lot earlier. I actually am not Danish. I just happen to be big fan of Mikkel Kessler and I thought that Mads Mikkelsen was one of the better Bond villains.
I'm Australian, and I also have a great appreciation for Kessler's skills. That is most likely because some of our best prospects for a while were around that weightclass, so we paid a lot of attention to it. Mikkel was head and shoulders above everyone except JC. But I think overall Kessler does get his props on this board. Most people still assume he is no1, even though he has been inactive for so long. Some people seem to dismiss him totally, others seem to think that he is just another contender. But most give him his due - an assumption that he is the best fighter in the division so long as he hasn't declined due to his layoff.
fair enough. but to answer your question, kessler isnt 'underrated', hes just another talented european fighter trying to get recognition fighting out of europe - and that will always limit a fighter because if a fighter isnt known internationally he cant generate the same cash as lesser fighters and wont get network backing. EDIT : so when people - and kessler - say 'no-one will fight him', what it really means is get yourself on a plane, get on some undercard PPV fights in the US and make the public fall in love with you.
It's not quite as crazy a match-up as some of the OTT reactions would suggest. But Kessler should beat Roy Jones comfortabley at this stage.
my old sparring partner returns... no i think kessler is a 'best of the rest' fighter until he proves otherwise. kessler cleaned out top SMW ranked challengers pre-calzaghe so he clearly has something to offer.
It would be good exposure for Kessler and thats about it. He would probably KO jones and send him in to retirement. This fight will never happen though.
Not to mention the fact that Mikkel actually fought in Australia 4 years ago, which gave you guys the chance to become familiar with his skillset up close as opposed to just seeing highlights and hearing about him from afar. I would say that the more intelligent fans on the board rank Kessler correctly whereas a lot of people who dismiss the idea of any European fighter being good are naturally gonna try and discredit him. I have to say that I was surprised that so many people could be so cavalier as to just say that Andre Ward is gonna beat Kessler without any problem when there is absolutely no evidence to substantiate this. Sure, beating Edison Miranda is a good thing but let's not go overboard with that win. BTW, I always enjoy watching Australian fighters. Briggs, Green, and now Katsidis. Those guys know how to put on a fight. Kinda wish Briggs was still around.
yeah but i haven't been working 11-9 lately and then running 5 miles 5 days a week at 10 pm... this is my first day i'm giving myself absolutely nothing to do, and i'm going to enjoy it on the boards.
It's not all that cut-and-dry. I'm sure you are aware of the problems Kessler had with Mogens Palle. I don't think it's a coincidence that Mikkel found himself in the Super 6 tournament the moment he signed with another promoter.
i agree with that but its fortunate for kessler. remember kessler still fought mostly in copenhagen until he ran into these problems, and he was 29-30 at that time. leaving palle was always a good thing because kessler was his golden goose and palle would have pissed him around fighting euro fighters forever if he hadn't left him.
