Although The Golden Boy's W-L-D ledger started to go downhill towards the end of his glittering career, I believe in the fullness of time, Oscar's standing amongst his peers will be beyond reproach, and an automatic place in the IBHoF assured. During his career, he fought every 'marquee' fighter worth their salt, always giving 100%, even if he came up short once or twice. Of the last 20 years, I can think of no more than perhaps half a dozen fighters who were more exciting or skilful in their primes, and his PPV figures are to this day amongst the highest ever. Add to this his business nouse and good looks, the sonofabitch had everything! (ps please just tell me that THOSE photos were fake?!)
One of the best of his generation. He will also probably hold the title of being the most popular boxer in his generation.
Most popular of his whole generation. Took boxing to a level that his peers could not. Took on all challenges. Although he lost many of the big fights, how many were controversial? Trinidad fight could have gone either way. Moseley II could have gone either way. Mayweather fight could have gone either way. Did well against Hopkins til the power was too much to handle. He showed that not only could he fight the best, but fight at their level(except for Pac). Gold Medal! Those are hard to come by these days. Many legends never won gold. Some by robbery, some by circumstance but that adds a huge amount to Oscar's resume in itself along with 10 belts, 6 classes and consistent numbers like no other. Living legend. Fruitcake in personality, but Legend!
Really? On the contrary, I believe he 'lost' a couple which he clearly won, but he took the 'defeats' like a man and never complained. Another big plus in his favour.:thumbsup
I'd say both, really. I lean more towards rewarding the accomplishments though. His resume is spectacular.
History will judge him much better then people judge him today. About 80% of them (due to age or lack of interest towards boxing back then I guess), think DLH's career started somewhere in the Tito days, most remember his Trinidad and post-Trinidad performances, the ups and downs. But in reality, he was already an A-list ATG entering the Tito fight with an undefeated record and 4 divisional titles with a terrific resume which will stand time easily. People will give him a lot of credit 10-20 years from now for the line of world champions, greats and ATGs he faced.
One of the best of his era ... he left everything in the ring and didn't disappoint ever ... no matter if he won or lost. He had some pretty good fights ... I still watch Trinidad vs DLH alot one of my favorite fights.
A very good fighter who lost all the biggest fights of his career. One of the most incredibly marketable boxers ever.
