i think a lot of us are a bit guilty of talking down the importance of a good amateur career, sometimes focusing too much on the differences in the games. Look at the fighters in the super six, they all have stellar amateur backgrounds - by that I mean medallists at an elite am level or huge win percentage. Froch - world am bronze Ward - Olympics gold Dirrell - Olympic bronze Taylor - Olympic bronze Kessler - 44-3 record, with European youth title Abraham - 81-3-6 record
As important as it is, a solid amateur background will only take you so far as there are inherent circumstances in the pro game that will almost always require a fighter to take on an approach that calls for something that goes beyond anything he could have learned as an amateur no matter how solid his pedigree.
That's why I'm gonna put my cash on ward for 10x the money! And he will improve a lot till its time for semi finals.
I can't wait for this tournament - pure genius for whoever came up with it - and much much much respect to all the guys competing, and those that helped set it up.
The point which is well illustrated is that these guys were all good amateurs ergo good boxers. The pros requires an additional set of attributes. Who posesses those attributes will become apparent as the tournament progresses.
Wow. I didn't know that. Thanks for the update!!! :good I can't say I'm surprised, I think Froch is WAY better than he's given credit for.
And how many of those eight losses were due to his extreme nerves when an amateur? I'd hazard a guess at four or five of them... Also, he was England (or was it GB?) captain, so shows that he was respected.
I see something special in Froch..he will be the next British superstar and the doubters will only make him more determined so I hope they keep spitting their disbelief. I'm positive that Froch feeds off it.
he was england captain as audley was the GB one an froch said he looked up to him them days an aud use to give him pepp talks to calm his nerves but he seems to not be able to produce as a pro an fights scared an negative. also that denis inkin fight he droped him in the last round heavily had there bin 1 more round or jus 30secs hed av stopped him but as htey say time waits for no man hence inkin ducked froch like a limo stick as a pro multi pull outs like hes goin in bare back ona chick not on contraception. check this fight of frochs actual american debut on a GBP show fighting henry porras wen porras was dangerous an good still. http://www.viddler.com/explore/venu44/videos/5/
