ant replies? these would be great fights srr the dancing man with the slick moves and lamotta the bull always coming at you vs monzon a monster of a middleweight.what are your picks?
Ok I don't think either are easy for Monzon, but I think Robinsons speed, movement and brilliance beat Monzon to the punch edging out a hard fought UD. I think Monzon would control periods of a fight with Lamotta with his 1-2 and work the body and throw uppercuts to give him the better of a hard fought contest that sees him having to up his workrate to keep Lamotta off him
He would outbox Lamotta in a very rugged contest, and would outwork Robinson, grabbing a close decision. Sugar Ray was better, pound for pound, but I think Monzon was a better middleweight.
King Carlos goes 1-1 here. The W coming against LaMotta by UD, the L coming from Rob by UD. Monzon is able to keep the Bull at bay with his trombone jab, whereas Sugar Ray is a bit too slick and fast for him.
Never seen anyone matching up Monzon and Robinson before! How original. He beats Lamotta by UD, great ring generalship and he take what's coming back, Lamotta runs him ragged for the first couple of rounds but Monzon would find his timing and win on PTS over 15 in a competitive fight. Sounds like a very fun fight indeed but Monzon would be landing the cleaner blows IMO.
Monzon has dealt with the strong chinned Lamotta types - guys like Valdez and Bennie Briscoe, so I say Monzon beats Lamotta U decision. As complete as Sugar Ray was, I'm going to have to say Monzon as well. There was nobody bigger, and Monzon can out-control the pace. He seems ordinary...basic combinations...basic head movements, but for some reason I'd pick Monzon to beat both of them. Great Chin, Will power, and smarts are somtimes just enough to overcome technique. Unanimous decision again...
I pick Monzon UD over both of them. He was not at all flashy, but in exchanges he would land almost every punch and dodge or block the other guy's punches. I don't think SRR hit harder than Valdez, who was also very fast.
I'd definitely pick Monzon over Lamotta. If Robinson came in with form he had in Valentines Day massacre... he would cause big problems for Monzon. Carlos was used to fighting guys who came to him. He never faced anyone as fast, and gifted as Robby.
You cant be serious in comparing the speed of Valdez to that of Ray Robinson. Theres no comparison. Valdez had nowhere near the speed, and fludity that Ray had.
Why do people act as if Monzon was 6'3" or somethin? He was listed at 5'11 n a half. Robinson was listed at 5'11.
Carlos by UD over Jake, he would use his height and reach to full effect here and control the fight behind his jab for most of the night while mixing in the right hands and left hooks. Jake would get outworked and outpunched, but he would have his moments especially in close although even there Carlos would inevitably tie him up as he was deceptively strong for a man with his lanky frame. All in all King Carlos just has too much in his bag of tricks and boxing repertoire for a guy like Jake, two different classes of fighter. Now Carlos vs Robbie would be more challenging, but in the end Carlos would walk away a winner. Ray is quicker on his feet and with his fists tis` true, but a well timed and consistent jab is what is needed to offset another fighters speed advantage and Carlos had one of the best ever. My guess is if anything he would try and make Ray the aggressor and make him come to him, that way he would have been able to dictate the bout behind his trombone jab and play the role of counterpuncher. Of course its much easier said than done, but I do believe Carlos would have been able to get Ray to lead and even if he had to switch roles and take the initiative he wouldn`t be out of his element completely and would walk in using the jab as his range finder for the right hand. On the inside it would definately be Carlo`s fight as he would have been stronger than Ray and would have tied him up if Ray tried to fight his way out. Ray takes his share of rounds especially early, but as the bout wears on Monzon will begin imposing himself and turn the tide and keep it until the finish line. He may have to fend off a late rally by Robinson who would sense he is behind, but Carlos would weather the rallying attempt and keep his steady pace en route to a decision win, probably a split verdict along the lines of 8-6-1 or 9-6 in his favour with one dissenting vote for Ray by similar margins.
