Many seem to believe Shane is at the pinnacle of his career, and actually still in his prime due to his victory over Margarito. But just one fight before that Shane looked pretty damn washed up in a pretty competitive fight with Mayorga. Shane was struggling and definitely looked old, especially considering Oscar had his way with Mayorga prior to that -- which many can argue softened Mayorga up even more -- in a fight that took half the amount of time.

IMO, Shane's fight with Margarito was very overrated. For one, Marg didn't have his hands illegally wrapped and secondly Marg is super slow, obviously playing right into the quickness Mosley still possesses. That fight was super sloppy and Shane just doesn't get his shots off the same as he used to.

Everyone keeps talking as if Shane is back to pre- Vernon Forrest years -- giving him a legit chance to tackle the likes of Pac or Floyd. I don't buy it and just watching the Mosley/Mayorga fight reinforces that.

Indeed styles do make fights and Margarito's style played right into Shane's hands.

I actually had Mayorga ahead until that whopping KO. I don't think watching that fight tells us that Mosley isn't capable of fighting at the top level; it just summarizes his career as lacking consistency. He says he's back to his best after he's dropped his old conditioning coach, but there's no way to know from one fight to the next what he's going to bring to the table. His next fight should be a yardstick, particularly if he faces Clottey: is Mosley back to elite form, or is he just as volatile as ever?

You really have to look at the way Mayo was fighting back then. He was literally sticking his chin in the air and allowing free shots. He did this with Forrest, Tito, Oscar and a host of others. He finally learned it wasn't a good idea to let a banger get a free shot, maybe a little late.

The point is Mayo fought Vargas and Mosley in a completely different style. He was actually using his feet and boxing very hard to prepare for that when a guy has always fought one way. If Mayo was still active and fighting inthat way he gives anyone from 47-54 hell.

Shane has had his ups and downs. Through it all he's never had a real boxing coach with alot of knowledge he's had daddy. The old man finally:happy has a real trainer who can set up strategies and really show him how to break a fighter apart. I know he's older and this bull**** inactivity isn't helping but I believe he can still be a major force for a few years. he doesn't have that crazy lifestyle and leads a fairly disciplined life which will help his longevity.

And just for the record, I'm a fan of Shane and was ecstatic when he beat Marg, but I see him around the same level as Oscar -- he just hasn't ran into someone like Pac yet.

The Marg win was great. But I believe the way he won had alot to do with Marg partying too much after the Cotto win. And the constant ring wars he was getting into. Try and count all the shots he ate between the two Cintron fights the Williams fight and the Cotto fight not to mention Clottey it's unbelievable.

Mayorga is faster than Margo, and he is a better fighter coming forward....

If Mayo had had a good trainer, he would have been a better fighter.... eventhough he never had (xcept his fight wiht Mosley), he did well during his career and he would be for anyone out there a though mofo if he trains properly.

Mayorga's worst mistake of his career was letting Tito tee off on him in their fight. I remember thinking "wtf is he doing?"

It always seemed prety funny to me that Shane gets a lot of flak for his fight against Mayorga and then gets praised for the Margarito fight. He fought the exact same way for both fights; clinching a whole lot, throw loaded up haymakers, and he eventually wore both opponents down and knocked them both out. I mean, what's the difference here?
