Found this new interview of Junior "poison" Jones googling boxing, check it out it is a 2 part interview. What is your best memory of "Poison"? Mine has to be when he KOed Marco Antonio Barrera for his 1st pro loss. I hope you guys like it http://www.dumb-out.net/
To be honest, I think that's everybody's best moment of Junior. Haters who don't like him for beating Barerra point out his loss to Morales though, lol.
Yes, I remember him very well, and saw a rather large number of his up and coming bouts back in the day. He was highly regarded for a short period of time, and looking somewhat menacing. One of the matches that I recall, was a bout against a fighter name Jorge Elicier Julio. That was a very exciting and competitve bout.
for a tall lanky guy with a shaky chin his ability to dish and take punishment is almost hilarious....his jab to me wasnt technically perfect it was just a very fast heavy left hand and with his reach he could land form a mile away, also very awkward turned side on but that right hand out of a shoulder roll destroyed many guys. he was tall and lanky and fought flat footed thats why his style looked so weird at times. He had a good righthand, and for the most part had Barreras number. I am suprised his crappy chin held up against Barrera in two fights. He was in life and death fights a lot.
I always was impressed with his boxing and technical ability. Unfortunately, he tended to either tire or lose focus/discipline in his fights, and that led to his KO losses to Johnson and Pinckney. I was very impressed with him on the way up, and had very high expectations of him (like many other people did) but that all came crashing down when he was stopped by Johnson. After that he barely scraped by some journeyman on a close, questionable decision, and then was basically one-punch KO'd by Pinckney, which figured to end his career as a top tier competitor. I didn't see him fight again for some time after that, but eventually he reemerged to beat Canizales on the undercard of Gatti-Rodriguez. I felt he was very impressive in that performance and showed surprising toughness, and when the match was made vs. Barrera, I was probably the only person on the planet who picked Jones to pull the "upset." Sure enough he did, although he was "robbed" of a TKO victory when they elected to give him the win on a DQ instead. After Jones beat him again in a rematch, it looked like the way was once again open for him to have a long and successful reign (and possibly a big money fight vs. Hamed), but things came crashing down once again when he got drawn into a slugfest with McKinney in what was supposed to be a "tune up" fight in his own hometown, and he got brutally KO'd. After that he was pretty much washed up, but he did have enough left to beat fellow has-beens like Tom Johnson and Tracy Patterson over the remaining years of his career.
I remember Jones. I'd started getting into boxing as a kid in the late 80s to early 90s, but had stopped watching much for awhile when Chavez started going downhill. Then the start of Boxing After Dark with the Barrera vs McKinney war brought me back big time and instantly made me a Barrera fan. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way in the two bouts between Barrera and Jones and was completely gutted by those losses. And the war between Jones and McKinney was just brutal and beautiful at the same time, says a lot about how tough McKinney was, how cool he was under fire, and how much heart he had to withstand that barrage. I'm pretty sure I still have the fight on tape from recording it on HBO. Unfortunately after that Jones st6arted going downhill really quickly, and it's too bad, because he was good and he was always exciting. It's just too bad he couldn't take it like he dished it out, and that he elected to go to war at times when he would have done better boxing and using his head, because he had some impressive tools.
Jones had no defensive skills whatsoever, that's what did him in more than anything. He was very skilled offensively, but he just walked into a lot of big shots. His chin was good but not great, but walking into bombs will have anybody on ***** street.
Junior had a real barnstomer in the UK with Big Punching prospect Richard Tiger Evett, Tiger Evett with his Tiger Shorts and Tiger Hairstyle looked the part and fought part Attacking Junior from the off with vicious hooks a big right hands, on a number of occassioins a shaken Junior looked literally one punch from oblivion, but he rode the storms and lashed back, it was heart in mouth stuff, Finally Juniors experiance told, and when Young Evett started to Tire and was slower to close on Junior, mr Jones landed the Bombs to floor and Stop Evett, Neither fighter was really the same after this war. (of course in Juniors case this simply added to the wear and tear.)
